Overland Expo is a fantastic event for so many reasons. It’s a place to meet world travelers, make new friends, eat great food, and learn new skills. You can take classes in driving, find new ways to pack, get advice on planning your trip, and even receive tips and tricks on how to cross a border in Africa when the guards are less than accommodating. Basically, if you look hard enough, you can find information on just about anything overland at this event, but there’s one thing you won’t have to look hard for, and that’s cool vans and campers. They’re literally everywhere, from massive 6×6 trucks to old-school pickups and brand new Sprinters. While we didn’t have time to capture each one, we did manage to snap photos of a few of our favorites. So without further ado, here’s a look at the vans and campers of Overland Expo East 2019.
There were some truly spectacular builds at Expo East this year, but this Ford was, without a doubt, one of our favorites. Was it perfectly polished and restored? No. But was it authentic and unique? Absolutely. This truck had more character than most of the show’s vehicles combined, and we couldn’t help but love it for that.
If a more polished and reliable Ford suited your style, then Goose Gear’s FiftyTen F-350 would certainly have caught your eye. We have a full-length feature story coming out on this shortly, but let’s just say that it performs even better than it looks.
The Storyteller Overland Sprinter was definitely one of our favorite off-the-shelf “RV” options at the show, probably because it didn’t look or feel anything like one. They come standard with a Front Runner roof rack and powered awning, solar, massive battery banks, four-wheel drive, a side access ladder, and an interior that quite frankly, is head and shoulders above what most folks are offering. Oh, and the icing on the cake? They’re available through a nationwide dealer network with RV financing.
Main Line Overland had some seriously fantastic builds at the show, like their Range Rover Sport and Safari Porsche, which you can see here, but I dug the simplicity of this Tacoma and Four-Wheel Camper combo. It had just the right amount of capability to get you out into the backcountry in comfort without spending loads of cash on modifications.
As usual, Sportsmobile showed up with two stellar rigs: a Sprinter, and one of their new Sportspmobile Classic E-Series vans. Each offers impressive off-road capability, a comfortable interior, and the reputation and quality that has made Sportsmobile the company they are today. As much as I liked that new Revel, this older model with bigger tires and more modifications made me love it more. I can’t wait to see what the new model will look like with a similar kit.

We figured we would top things off with this rig. Don’t get us wrong, we like big trucks, but holy smokes, does this thing have a lot of gear. That’s an expedition truck, towing an off-road double-axle trailer, hauling a large storage box, two kayaks, a roof tent, UTV, and a motorcycle at the very back. Sometimes less is more, and based on the for sale sign by the truck, this owner might agree.
