Wow, what happened? Just posted something and bam, we have a new forum. :wings: Interesting. So what, all the childless peoples don't want to hear about diapers and runny noses?

Cool, thanks!

Just funny, because I was typing a reply in the main forum, and when I clicked "post", found myself in here.

I was equally surprised.
I think it is warranted though, we seem to have a largish group of folks in similar situations raising young'uns.

It will be great to bounce ideas off of you wild and crazy guys!

I think it is our duty to pass outdoor interest to the next generation. Good to see a section devoted to that purpose.

Quick Story - The story of how I ended up as an ExPo junkie...

Shortly after my own daughter was born, a co-worker was telling me about his weekend; his brother had visited from back east, so my coworker, the grandparents, the brother, and a whole RV-load of everyone's kids went down to "Campland by the Bay" her in San Diego. (About as non-rugged as beach camping gets.) Apparently after about four measly hours, all of the kids older than about eight were all whining about having to be out camping and would all rather be back at home or the hotel playing XBox, watching TV, etc. The only kids who were digging it were the youngest ones.

The conversation reminded me of the countless camping trips my divorced parents had dragged me on. RV camping with Mom in Yosemite, quick weekend trips in the VW westy with Dad's new family to the desert, all of it. I wondered if I hadn't gotten started so young, if it would still mean so much to me?

Right then, I decided that MY DAUGHTER WILL GO CAMPING. OFTEN. And here I am. Researching, learning, and preparing myself and our vehicle so that she has at least the same set of experiences that I did.

Great new forum! with my daughter being 15 months now this will be her first season of real camping, we went twice last year when she was tiny but there was no walking or runing around then. Or complaining about being in the car....

I often read this board but don't comment to often, however this is a great new sub-forum idea. I was worried as a new father that my outdoor days would be greatly diminished if not non-existant. My wife's family is great, but I wouldn't hesitate to categorize them as sissys when comes to getting out camping, exploring, hiking, etc.

I talked with a co-worker I looked up to, about my concerns since his family is always out doing the above. He simply stated that my wife and I would be surprised at how resiliant kids are, if I start them young, they'll know no difference and can't help but fall in love with it.

Long story not so short, I discussed my concerns with my wife and she agreed and we gave it a try. We have been taking my son camping, jeepin, fishing, etc. since he was six weeks old. We try for one weekend a month minimum. There are adjustment we as adults have to make, but such is life.

On side note I was filled with pride when I woke up this past weekend (camping at a local state beach) to my son's voice, "Daddy! Daddy!".....me-"yes"....my son," I NEED DIRT!" He wanted out to go play in the dirt.:D

Start 'em young, that is what I did.
I was divorced back in '88, and I took both my sons camping every other weekend the summer of '88 from May until Labor Day.
The youngest earned his keep that day helping me set up camp.
Baby shoes do not stay very clean though in dirt :D

My youngest here was not even two yet I do not think, or maybe older.
This had to have been the summer of '88, as I bought a brand new trailer summer of '89.

Reminds me, I need to go through my old picture albums and scan all of the camping ones in some day.

It is good to get them into this at an early age.

I think this'll be great. Nice to have a place to talk with other parents. I know there are TONS of parenting forums out there, but I find most of them tend to be the "SuperParent" type. Talking about all the "best" toys, the safest most expensive car seats, private school, etc... I get the impression people around these parts are more like me.

Fantastic!

I think it is GREAT that ExPo now has this sub-forum! Thank you so much to the moderators for opening it.

As we have traveled around meeting other overland travelers we've noticed that there is a very substantial group in their 30's / 40's with small kids. We're all members of ExPo, and we all talk about traveling with our kids, so now it is nice to be able to combine the two.

For the past two years we've been members of the Yahoo Groups "Families On The Road (FOTR)" and "Burning Mom's" -- which are probably as opposite to each other as is possible. FOTR is mostly fundamentalist families with 8 kids homeschooling out of their RV's, while Burning Mom's is all freaks who are crazy enough to take their kids out to the middle of the desert for a week every summer.

We somehow fit into both categories (except the religious fundamentalist part) -- but have been eager to find other families who are actually overlanding and doing RTW trips with their kids.

So happy that now there's this forum to talk about these kinds of things.
