Wheel/hub question on trailer build

My parents had a trailer laying around that they weren’t using, so I figured I needed another project.

I ordered a new Dexter axle for it with 5x5 hubs in a custom width with the intent of running a set of take off Jeep Willys wheels on it. Today I got the new axle mounted up and ran into a problem installing the wheels.

The Jeep wheels are hub centric. The Jeep wheel will not clear the hub on the trailer axle. My question is, would there be any harm in grinding down the wheel to clear the hub?

As long as you have acorn style lug nuts you should be fine.

You need to use a spacer for this.

Grinding the hub is not an option.

Having them machined may be, but you could significantly weaken the hub.

Spacers would also make more sense to me to make changing a flat with a third wheel easier.

He said grind the inside of the wheel, not the hub.

Clearancing the inside of the wheel center a bit would be 100% fine. You don't need a spacer as long as your spare was clearanced as well.
