Vanagons are sweet. even the 2wd are pretty capable with a lift and good tires. reliability is a little rough though, even the Subie conversions aren't overly reliable but better then stock. GFC or Vagabond truck shells are simple and can be outfitted with Webasto heater or something of that nature.
We have a JDM import camper thats 4X4 and is very capable. Pretty sweet setup if you want full camper options like shower, sink, etc. No black water to deal with, Grey water goes directly out. Designed to use a cassette style toilet in the shower stall.
