I have been looking for awhile for a gen 3 Montero, but no luck locally and via Craigslist in the north east. I am located in Washington, D.C. but willing to fly & drive for the right car. I am ideally looking at the lowest milage(under 100k, still possible?) / best service records I can find. Willing to expand the budget for phenomenal condition. Prefer stock, but wouldn't mind well documented modifications. If anyone knows a member, friend, or see even an intriguing ad, please let me know. Sorry if this is suppose to go in a for sale section, but I thought it would pertain more to the Mitsubishi only forum.

Thanks
-David

Looking for that thing i just had in my hand...
Buy in Az, fly out and come wheeling with me. There have been a couple nice ones here lately, I'd offer mine but it has 155k. It's still possible to find them around 100k but keep in mind you will still need to do the timing and associated maintenance so plan for those expenses.

Welcome

I like this one. I am prepared to fly/drive, but at 2500 miles away I would like to consider a few closer to home first.

Or you can simply have it delivered right to your doorstep. Often times you will find someone on here who lives close to a vehicle you are interested in and will go look at it for you, then you just have it shipped.

Ok, so they can't spell, maybe to your advantage? The truck looks pretty good from here: (road trip?)

Consider hiring a local ASE certified import mechanic to do a pre-purchase inspection. If this one lived locally, should be rust-free.

With a vehicle over 10 years old, I'd suggest widening your mileage parameters a bit. Another 50K on a well maintained Montero (cosmetically and mechanically) is nothing to sweat.

I bought my '02 Limited from a little hole in the wall used car dealer, the owner was driving it at the time, was having trouble selling it, didn't really understand the market. I made a deal, and it has turned out to be a great truck.

Good Luck!

believe it or not, SUVs get driven more than cars according to NHTSA. They do projections on mileage driven over years and say that an "average" 2003 (15 years old) will have 188K on it and an "average" 2005 (13 years old) will have 166K on it. There were only 18K MY 2003 and newer Monteros brought into the USA, around 60% of these should still be on the roads, generally 6% of them change hands each year. The pool is small, think about 650 trucks total available to be purchased in any given year throughout the USA in that 4 year span (2003 thru 2006).

While we're digging around, did this one not check out for you?

And from the "just for fun" category, here's an '01 Limited that has had "the fool" driven out of it, but take a closer look at the pictures. Sharp eyes will notice the ad has two interior shots from another car, but they claim over 125 service records, and the front seats still look new, an amazingly good looking truck for such high mileage. Granted you won't get the electronic traction control, and the 3.8L, but if this truck has been as well maintained as it appears, maybe well under $ 3K cash? and you're off to the races.
Edit: so I'm having a really hard time believing this truck has 250K miles, wonder if it is a typo?

Yea and the location is a bit of a drive from the airports around here. Not sure if it matters, but I just noticed that it's the same car as one of the links normal_dave posted so they are a dealer.

The DC was is a one to avoid. I went checked out. There are no maintenance records and current owner received from a person who hadn't been driving in a long time. Check engine lights, Transfer case wont go into any of the center lock modes, smoke from cat-mid exhaust, sloppy steering. Didn't go into highway speeds, but I wasn't confident in it.
On the plus side I 'talked' him down to $3500 before even seeing it (claming KBB)....

I just bought a 2003 limited from Michigan with 91 k (climate and rust exposure I know, but something I could factor). It had extensive records since first owner and recent timing belt/water pump + auto / diff / transfer flushes. Other downsides slight dog, smoke odor. I got tired of waiting....

Pics soon. :)D425A3D2-DB53-4B38-A6D4-D164762475BC.jpg with a gen 2.5 we saw on the way. Mines the black one :)

How are the Gen 3s for rust? I am in Chicago and am looking for one but was thinking going south or west to find rust free. Do the Montero's withstand the rust well underneath? The body of most around here are surprisingly rust free.
