With teh big diesel boom, there was plenty of weak trucks out there because those engines were so heavy. A friend of mine has a 2001 Superduty F350 CCLB, diesel with only 2200# capacity before he's over GVWR. I've seen plenty of upscale 350's with less payload than a 250 due to the weight of all of those options.
My new gas F250 has only 3100#. The F350 sitting next to it on the lot, only 3200#, thanks to all of the frivolous amenities.
