Two old Suburbans go mine hunting

That looks like a great trip! Tell your son congrats on being an Eagle. It takes a lot of work and dedication. I got mine back in 2005. Make sure if he ever wants to be in the military he tells his recruiter. It got me an extra rank in my contract.

Is it wrong that I scrolled right past every photo without burb-porn in it? :Wow1:

68-72 chevy is an addiction.

Ok now I'll go back and actually read it.

Hey Matt, funny you should mention the burb pics as my wife & son were very "tactful" when they mentioned many times to make sure I got pics of things OTHER than the rigs :)
Yeah right!
People & things are just there to complement the vehicles of course.

Now get us some trip reports with your Blazer so we can drool over it.

Soon Lance, soon. It's been a little chilly for road trips lately. -27F this weekend. Warmed to 10F and snowing now. That said perhaps I should just go take some pics of it anyway! She's wearing her very attractive winter gear. A plow mount and grill bra. Sounds almost dirty....

Great report! Man those are some good looking rigs--great scenery too :bike_rider:

My old man would have pretty much gave me his 71 GMC suburban but being 19 years old I never thought I'd need something so huge... Now I have a family and realize how stupid I was in my youth

thanks guys...
I expect Nick-Nobin to chime in soon with some more pics and his version of following my older rig in his big orange beast :)

Funny thing about a trip like this is that before you go there is a long list of mods you want to do...cool stuff like bumpers, lights, and all..
then you come back and realize there are more important things you NEED to do that are boring..like door seals to keep dust out, rattles & squeaks that drive the wife nuts, sound deadening & insulation...boring but important :)

Great trip report Lance! I really like that area for winter trips.

BX and I will be out at North Well this weekend working the Parker 425 - you picked the right time for your trip! Not only is the area closed from Friday thru Sunday, but the roads after the race are terrible! It's amazing what happens after 200 plus racers make three laps out there. The graders have a lot of work to do afterwards.

The spot in Swansea that you camped at is on Railroad Canyon. That's the fastest access to Swansea - follow the road south and you come out east of Midway. That used to be part of the Parker course many years ago.

Now that is the truth. For every fun project it seems there are 3 or 4 boring one that really need to come first.

I do. I have to sort through them and load them to PB. It's been a little hectic around here since we got back. I got some real good ones though.

That wicked cross wind we fought on 74 informed me that the door seals I used do not work so well. I could feel the wind blowing through to MY side of the truck. Also, I am beginning to wonder if these trucks were even remotely dust resistant when they were new (door seals/hatch/tailgate seals).

Well I tell ya keeping the dust out is an issue on many rigs...my previous $112,000 Sportsmobile had trouble with the rear doors and dust.

On the rear I will be taking a close look at the body & gate/hatch shapes and then making a run over to Space Age in Mesa as they have the best collection of rubber seals I have seen (if anyone knows of better in the Phx area please tell me).
My thought is to create a 2 sided mating seal.

Of course the doors need a redo along with all the glass except the windshield which was recently replaced.

One of my favorite things about a good on board air setup like the Extreme Outback I have run in the past is using it to blow all the dust out at the end of the day before I go to sleep at night. Makes a big difference in how I feel if the inside is a bit clean :)

Nice report Lance. I concur about the on-board air sys. Karla grabs the air nozzle twice a day to relocate the on-board dirt elsewhere. Once removed, shes a happy camper. Great for airing out the sleeping bags, stinky boots and even one's hairdo.

I'm following your lead on this. I have a 12V compressor install planned to replace my Powertank so I can blow the truck out frequently on longer trips. I've become mildly? obsessed with sealing things up after a dusty trip last fall.

Let me know when you go. I would like to check this place out.
