I really hope (no-nonsense) regulations get put on these e-bikes. I don't want to see them on the trails. Limit them to motorized trails. No matter how you spin it, it's a motorcycle.
Don't think that'll happen. One of the markets is getting seniors and those with disabilities out enjoying the same nature you and I enjoy. And e-bikes are speed limited to shut down at 20mph/32kph, they are not motorbikes. The existing regulations are excellent. Where the problem is is people buying electric motor bikes which are not speed limited and flying under the radar without registration, insurance or an operators license.

Technically an e-bike is an electric assist bike, you must pedal before any electric power is applied.... but many are being sold without that limitation.

Electric bikes are classified as “motor assisted cycles” in British Columbia and, like federal regulations, must have operable pedals, a 500W battery or less and a top speed of no more than 32 km/hr.
