I bought this around 2006 with 190k miles. Make no mistake, I have built it up to be a camping rig and have used it as such... but originally used it as a daily driver in it’s early years. It has all that you need to get out and explore. It has the sweet 3RZ (4 cylinder engine) research LC Engineering for a high HP swap
when the time comes. The transmission feels super strong but assume that it could use a new clutch soon. (I liked the Heavy Duty unit that i put in years back)
I sanded the rough spots on the frame when I bought it and sprayed a chassis type coating on it and feel the frame is in good shape (I had it checked by factory when the recall was going). I never thought I would sell this truck, but the kiddo is getting bigger. I drove this to flaming Gorge recently with an adult, kiddo and 150#’s of dogs and all the camping/fishing gear and it did great… can shift to 3rd gear and run high rpms to get up the big hills… maybe drop the heat through the heater for a few minutes if it is super hot outside. The AC hasn’t worked for as long as I’ve owned it.. I’ve tried but believe (as I was told) it’s leaking, right at the input junction… probably a $12 part. Just did elephant hill in the needles and it rides so nice.
Gets 15-17 ish mpg.
This is built for a 2 person/kid/dog long expedition (15-20 gallons H20) or 3 person and gear weekend type set up...It carries heavy loads on the dirt, very well…She’s a true ride or die kind of ho.
Over the years, I have:
-Doug Thorley headers
-upgraded the rear axle with a TRD locking axle from a 99. Back around 220k miles
Works great except the wiring was ripped off the mechanism last trip and needs solder/connections
-swapped motors about 280k (about 4-5 psi under on one cylinder) from recent compression test @ mark miller; runs and feels great
-about 12k miles on Fox Front shocks with reservoir/ easy to upgrade to adjustable if desired
-.5” front spacer
-camburg racing upper control arms with Heim Joints. New balls replaced ~10k ago
~10k miles on Bilstein 5100 Rear shocks with new shackles (drill out for greasable zerks) needs both replaced.
~10k miles on Heavy duty rear leaf-springs from all pro offroad
-relocated rear leaf perch to elongate and function like the 98-02 format
-on board air compressor is wired under the hood
-new optima battery red top
-ramsey winch with ARB front bumper
-Rock sliders bolted on
-Custom rear bumper with swing gate for gas tank, garbage , stove and toy box.
-Custom upper rack on shell (my sleeping platform) or could be used for gear hauling
-Custom snorkel with pre-filter (wish I made this day 1) the dust in the dessert is rough
-mud/fender flares from 02
-IPF front lights and reverse lights on toggle switch’s-needs rewiring
-wheel bearings around 235k and lower ball joints around 300k
-brand new headlights
-Newer Rack and Pinion-slightly bent steering column
-had a CB radio mounted, until the dog chewed the power supply, then the remote cable then the aux…. still have the dog
-can include Subwoofer and amplifier (already wired)
-tweeters and aftermarket audio, sounds like a speaker may be on it’s way out
-no radio antenna (removed for snorkel install)
-Rear differential breather valve was extended to the gas tank fill spout
-spare set of OEM CV Joints that could use a rebuild
-missing a mud flap or 2
-needs rotors turned or replaced
-removed front sway bar
I have an extra set of OME struts for the front, that you could drive on, when the FOX need to removed for rebuild!!
