Toyota 2wd pick up help

Hey everyone, one of my good buddies has an old 1996 2wd drive toyota pick up it's a manual with a 4cyl. He bought it as a work truck and it has about 230k on it. The other day it started whining when it's in gear and giving it gas. When you let off the whining starts to fade out and goes away. It also whines while it's out gear and giving it gas but still moving. He changed the rear axle oil and pinion seal but it's still there. I know theres probably several things it could be but does anyone have any suggestions as where to look next? Thanks everyone!
