took the Discovery to high Sierras camping and exploring
I have to say, what this diesel discovery was able to do is extreme off-road level.

The sign on the trail head said, modified vehicle with experience driver.
and here comes stock discovery and walked over,
I was diving my 2017 Tacoma TRD Of read,
discovery is without a doubt more capable.
he had to tow me up At one of the obstacles.

Stunning photos!

Yes, the modern LRs are really capable vehicles. Many people just stare in disbelief when I rock up at a trail with my L494, and then in even greater disbelief when I finish the trail.

You're a MUCH braver man than I for camping in snow

Haha we definitely didn’t plan for snow, but Sierras are known for fast Changing weather, and sure enough we got caught in the storm.

It's all relative.

Tires, wheelbase, width, driver experience, and other non vehicle related variables can make one Make/Model seem 'better' than the other in certain conditions.

We could all find a situation where a TRD Offroad Tacoma would do better than a Discovery....for sure in the reliability and resale market for starters.

I yet to find a situation where stock TRD off road Tacoma can do better than the stock discovery,
I own this truck for 4 years got it brand new, 68.000 miles now, About 80% off road miles.

Reliable? For sure,
But diesel discovery is nothing less, and I am pretty sure it will keep its value very well,

only time will tell

so far, I can confidently say, it outperforms Tacoma in every situation,

towing, ground clearance, approach and departure angles, gear ratios, fuel economy is amazing, 24 MPG vs 16MPG,
Fuel tank is 24 gallons Tacoma is 18 gallons
comfort is better, seating position is much better, Stock can take 33 inch tires, Tacoma can’t,

I can’t find a section to say Tacoma is better or even equivalent.
and this is my truck.

Funny to see this today as I have a modified 14 Tacoma off road and am picking up a Td6 Discovery this afternoon. I'll put some miles on the rover and report back. Excited to have a capable vehicle in stock form for long road trips. The Tacoma will never be sold but the 1000-2000 mile road trips with a family of 4 is starting to wear on me.

I wholeheartedly agree that the L462 D5 is super-capable, especially with the Td6 engine in low range. Have never needed the rear locker with mine - even with three wheels on ice and the fourth in a hole, the TR2 system took a few seconds to figure it out, with a little rocking it freed itself with no issues. A foot of snow on a 17 degree slope on Pikes Peak pea gravel...no sweat. About the only situation where the rear locker would be necessary IMO is if you offroad regularly with a trailer.

The D5 is a good set of tires away from doing 99.9% of trails out there right off the lot, and will overland anywhere you want to go. I added Lucky 8 rock sliders and a front bash plate for peace of mind after I took some trail damage - Aluminum panels aren't cheap to repair. $3500 *without* an insurance claim for a 12" scrape that covered two body panels....

And the second-best part is silent cruising at 27mpg on the interstate at an average of 75mph.

Great trip report @HUMMER/Expeditions . Good luck @sasquatch15 with yours.

Dieselranger so far this rig is amazing. Only have a few hundred miles on it so far but was able to hit a few unimproved roads with the family today in the rain. The level of smoothness and comfort compared to my tacoma with full suspension and adjustable shocks is unbelievable. Also getting 26.5 mpg around town so far compared to 16.5 is really nice.
