Thinking of a Ural

I have been thinking long and hard about a new restoration project for myself. My overbearing desire was for some kind of classic dual sport type bike. Then it hit me, why am I not looking for a 2wd sidecar? So does anyone have any ideas on how to score a restoration caliber(cheap) 2wd? Ural, BMW, I don't care, just not a chinese job. I have been looking around but most that I can find seem to already be mostly restored(expensive). Also if anyone has any tips on fixing a bike like this up I am all ears. This will be my first experience with these bikes.

I second the guys on AdvRider...tons of knowledge there about Urals.

I too, love 'em...if I had more room in the garage I'd likely have a Tourist for buzzing around town...but I do lust after the Gear Up....

They do seem to have some mechanical issues; however, so just make sure you know what you're getting into...or better yet...find one with a BMW engine transplant!

Does it have to be 2WD? Speaker's buddy Viking, built a killer offroad side car out of a old Honda XR 250. Sorry I don't have any pictures. It looks like Death on wheels, but, very cool none-the-less.

Oh, not only does it look it, but it is.

Thanks for the info, and that thing does look like death on wheels. I was thinking if I find something with a questionable motor I would just go ahead and do the BMW swap.

Thinking of an Ural

I have a 2005 Gear-Up which is the military verison of the Ural Patrol. I believe the military verisons are no longer being imported.

This is a all terrian motocycle with selctable 2 wheel drive. It is not a cruiser as the top speed is about 55MPH.

The nice thing about these bikes are that you can actually work on them. They are very robust.

My couple of trips to the desert were a lot of fun and the bike can go just about anywhere.

The out the videos on the imz site click on the Gear-Up. Below are some other sites to check out about Urals. Best of luck

Urals

My understanding the the export versions of the Ural as significantly different than the RDM versions. Different electrics, brakes and suspension.

If I were to undertake the rebuild of an earlier Ural, and I keep thinking about one, I'd seriously consider installing a BMW R75 motor from a /5,6, or 7 and changing the remaining electrics out to BMW stuff. I've been told to avoid the temptation to install an R90 or R100 motor as the transmission can't handle the power

Sounds like a fun project.
