Strapping down a kayak to a roof-rack

Ratchet straps are harmless to roto molded hulls. If it's a simple plastic hull, that's what I go for first. Fiberglass and carbon hulls need extra care, but they often have proper attachment points as well. (Epic at least)

Might want to slide apiece of rubber under the metal latches in the above picture so they don't dig into the hull. Often I use AC plumbing foam tubes on my straps to give them some squish.

I've never used a bow line. Scratches on my hood are worth more than your windshield, I guess. LOL. Those Yakima sideways racks are pretty handy and secure.

I've got some rubber bumper cover things I ordered from NRS to put on the metal latches/cam thingies.

Basically $8.00/pair, and I bought two pair. Not the cheapest (the straps themselves were only like $6.00/each), but if it'll protect the kayak then I'm good with them. I have some foam I could put under them, but I'm afraid it will get blown off going down the highway. I figured this was the simplest option.
