If Superwinch had a flagship winch, the X9/S9 were it. These were made in the USA when Superwinch actually did that kind of thing. They still show up in listings on websites occasionally but aren't actually available unless there was some cache in the back of a warehouse. Superwinch has changed hands a couple times since these X9's were made, and the days of USA made winches are probably over permanently for them so these winches are a special item.

I really hesitate to sell this because the early X9 was my first winch back in the 90's on my first "Real 4x4", a Series III diesel LR, and it served so many years with lots of abuse and I treated it poorly. An associate had this piece of gold buried in his shop from a 4x4 build that never happened and I gasped when he told me about it. The box was never opened! I had to open it to take a pic and make sure its all there but that's all the contact this had with the outside world since being boxed up in Connecticut years ago.

These are unique in the world of conventional winch designs. They are legendary, last forever, are very simple, super tough and use a differential gear design and better brake than your average 3-stage planetary winch setup. Uses a 12v 4.2 horsepower series wound motor and clocks in at almost 40FPM no-load line speed. Toyota was even offering these as factory winch gear on their rigs sold in Australia. They were also often paired with Defenders/Land Rover's, probably due to the UK connections Superwinch had there. (The Husky winches were made there!)

$750 takes it. I doubt you'll ever see this kind of deal pop up again. I'd defintely take one of these over the modern $1000+ equivalents!

$975 if you want it with USA made Dyneema Spydura 3/8" rope.

Pick up near LA. Can ship but it's going to run around $95 to the lower USA.

I wish I was in the market for a winch. What a deal and what a great wich! It was my favorite back in the late 90s. I just found a very old picture of my old rig and yes, take a look at the winch. Fantastic memories...

Sorry, I dont post much here but I have to correct this

They did have a flagship winch, the Husky. It was/is one of the best made winches of all time.

The X9 was/is still great a winch though.

Oh nice 109! Thanks for the comment. I actually had one more X-9 later on in the early 2000's, mounted on my upgraded C303 4x4. ;) The other pic is of a rear bumper that I set one up one for a customer's Volvo who wanted front and rear winches.

I partially agree but the winches served different purposes. The Husky 10K was probably the best heavier expedition rig winch ever made but they are painfully slow, harder to mount and really heavy so not suited to something like my old SIII SWB Rover, esp. when I operated on the east-coast trails a lot and had to deal with mud. You can't use a worm-drive winch on those muddy trails very well because of the speed, where it would cause you to run over the cable. You need that planetary speed (or an 8274) in mud and snow plus that chassis was better off with a lightweight winch as well. Apples and oranges, as they say.

That Volvo is dreamy  what model is it? I wonder if there are many here in the states.

Thanks. That's a 1975 C303 (technically TGB-11) ex Swedish military Volvo. There are some around, but probably less than 200 in the states if I'm wildly guessing. I was the first to import a few back when 1975 became legal and their military strated to release them. That one above was museum quality when I got it over here with 15,000 miles on it from new!

I’d love to pick your brain on them, and see what it takes to get in the drivers seat of my own one day. Such a rad platform and so unique. Awesome rig, makes the unimogs seem like a Honda Civic with numbers that low.

Yes it's highly unique and way ahead of its time. It will out-wheel just about every 4x4 made from stock. Shift on the fly 4x4 and low range, with portal axles, 35''s and lockers. It drives much more like a modern 4x4 compared to just about every military grade 4x4 next to the Pinzgauer. There's a section on real4x4.com dedicated to the Volvo's

Hello Vince, got a couple questions!
1. What are the overall dimensions of this winch?
2. What is the mounting bolt hole patter dimensions?

What else comes in the box? I’m interested in this for my FJ60.

Cheers, James

Hey James, everything winches usually come with are in there: Roller fairlead, remote, mounting bolts, manual, solenoid bracket, battery wires so its ready to go. I'm also adding that new soft shackle.

The mounting pattern is the standard Warn/Ramsey 10x4.5" pattern and the size is in the typical 9K planetary winch range - 22.88" L x 6.75" D x 6.63" H (check pic)
Another good thing about this set-up is you can easily mount the control box somewhere else by just using longer wires. If you dont want to see the box, you can place it toward the back of the bumper or even back behind the grill, etc.

Christian, if you are truly hitting 9700lbs on the scales, you'd probably want to go with a 12K-15K winch. The X9 would definitely handle a lot of your common/lighter winching needs but if you are really hanging on steep rocks or stuck in deep mud, etc. I'd want something heavier for that much weight. I'd look at either a Ramsey Patriot 12 or 15K winches, or the Warn M12 or M15. The prices are going to be a good bit higher though. I do a lot of winch repair and restorations and would likely come across something that would fit but it wouldn't be new, if that's what you are looking for, but would be much cheaper. Oh and budget in yourself a heavy duty snatch block too, like the Warn Epic 18K block.
