So... what do we think?

JLR had hinted in the past they might re-start Camel Trophy.

Based on their current financial situation, do you think they can pull it off?

If they did it, they’d probably use their new Defender. Do you think that could do it?

And since cigarette companies are forbidden to sponsor sporting events, what will they call it?

I just don’t see this happening ...

Agreed that it will most likely be defender driven but IMO, if that was going to take place, they would have to have years of reliability on the Defender documented or it would crush the reputation right out of the box.

Probably something boring like "LR Defender Trophy" or "Defender Challenge."

As far as finance, I do not see this being a show stopper for LR. The reality is, they might be able to learn something from Ford on this; meaning cut production on ANY vehicle that does not make the company a profit! Of course, that might limit LR to one or two models from LR and RR branding names but it only makes sense for profits and recovery IMO. Honestly, this is not rocket science, to be honest.

Ditch the RR Evoque and build a base model Discovery at the same price point; more car for same or less money and make it cheaper than the Ford Explorer! Put base model and utility back in the LR line and luxury in the RR line. I just see competing interests inside their own markets that is limiting sales.

All in all, I know nothing which is why I do not have my own business! :p:ROFLMAO::LOL:hahahhha

Well, I think you hit the nail on the head- they create internal competition trying to be all things to all people.

If they continue down that path, they need to offer base models in each line- steel wheels and cloth interior; a/c as an option etc.

2020 is coming fast so I guess we’ll see (assuming JLR survives that long)

There will be marketing events to introduce the new Defender. A Camel Trophy style event would be nice although the last staged event, the "G4 Challenge", seemed too politically correct and bland.

Remember when Land Rover was going to create 3 distinct categories - Defender, Discovery and Range Rover? "Land Rover" targeted business, farmers and a younger generation. "Range Rover" was a different class of vehicle, targeting high end. The current product offerings all look the same and the differentiation between Land Rover and Range Rover has been lost. They need to get back to their roots as I don't see a younger generation being introduced to Land Rover to grow the future buyers. Jeep understands that dynamic. LR doesn't.

My personal thoughts on what models will be discontinued - Discovery Sport & Velar. The Discovery will be redesigned. Cost have to be reduced to fit within the current volumes and singular 'design language'.

Where have they "hinted" this?

It would never be the same. It would be an endless discussion of inclusion, environmental "damage" done by any potential event, and they would tone down the difficulty to make sure the vehicles could do it. No more cars burning down, flipping, wading up to the neck in water, crazy wagon trains of 40 vehicles in the middle of nowhere. The events cost several millions of dollars to put on. Financially the way they are oriented with their current line I don't see it being justifiable to spend on that angle.

I could see it being in very open spots like russia, stan's, mongolia, china. It would be cool, just never AS cool as it was.

It was the CEO or someone with JLR who hinted at it during a press release- I think it was the announcement of the “new” Defender a few years ago. Not sure now but it was a mention and nothing more. Not a peep (that I’ve seen) since.

If you haven’t heard anything at all, it’s probably not going to happen.

Appears Apple has the same issues as Land Rover. Or vise versa. (Not related to China)

More like name drop all of the popular things that made them popular...but never any follow through. But name drop to temporarily spur interest in the product.

If they want to do anything like the camel trophy, they'll need to offer a vehicle that has wheels smaller than 19".

I hadn’t considered that angle- but now I see. Mention “epic” stuff from the past to rekindle interest, web traffic and socialist media traffic, so you can brag to Tata how great you are as you hemorrhage Kilo Pounds (sterling) of cash...

They have been quietly, occasionally polling audiences through invite-only owner focus groups.

Interesting but moot considering my points before. Prohibitively expensive, and their market posture is not geared towards brutal, go-anywhere, mud-filled, off road fests.

Interesting they are polling from that group, given it is bound to be so different from the people that applied to the original CT events. And by that I mean luxury car buyers that like adventure, vs everyday 4x4 race enthusiasts that had to endure punishing selections to make the teams.

See, I think you're on to something with this... more so cash in on old glory, avoid spending on a reboot altogether.
