Sleep in Jeep is Coming Back

Today I got started on the new cargo box/drawer system for the Jeep. I will also build in a Sleeping platform that will go in place of the front passanger seat like i had before. See my Jeep thread Here

I got started about 6:30 this morning. Hoooked up my little utility trailer and headed for Lowes. Bought the material I would need. I then stopped at the wagon wheel for a hardy Breakfast before heading home to start building.
Materials:
1 4x8 sheet of ¾ cabinet grade plywood ~$33
1 4x8 sheet on ½ cabinet grade plywood ~21

I waited until around 9 am before starting the saws up. I didn’t want the neighbors to get too upset. I built the drawer box first. I was surprised how quickly I built it. I only took 1 year of wood shop about 22 years ago. For the drawer box I used ¾ ply for the top and sides and ½ ply for the bottom plate.
I used my new httpKreg and it is the best money spent on this project. It made for a very clean install. It wasn't really need for this project because I plan to cover it in carpet.
The Box is 38 1/2" wide, 27" long and 8" deep

Next I started on the front box. It will be divided in to 3 areas; one side will hold my Recover gear like strap, Bottle jack and Jack base. The middle section will hold my valuable stuff like laptop, GPS, and camera. The third will hold some radio equipment and maybe a spare battery. It will have hinged lids, the out side lids will gullwing and the center will open up toward the front so i can access it from the drivers seat.
Box is 44" wide, 12" long, 8" deep

Enlighten us as to why you are making the switch back Jerry.

Not that there is anything wrong with that...I have to say sleeping in the truck does rock! :wings:

Well there are a few reasons:

WIND: it’s nice to just crawl into the jeep and go nity nite when is a blowing out side.

Security: I was building the box to store my gear anyways. It will be easy to just add a removable sleeping platform.

Wal-Mart: Just in case I have to stay a night in a Wal-Mart parking lot, a Jeep sitting in a parking lot is a little stealthier then a tent cot.

This design will give me a little more room for comfort. I won't have to sleep with my gear..

Plus it’s way cool.

I will still use the Tent-Cot for my quick over nighters and weekend trips.

Thanks for asking

That looks GREAT! Nice work Jerry!

Better keep that cot handy as I'll probably just leave the RTT at home and sleep in your Jeep from now on.

Very cool. All the reasons I chose the do a sleep-in setup with the 4Runner rather than a rooftop tent. I'm foregoing the drawer set up for now but I look forward to seeing your finished product there!

Very nice sir...
I agree with the wind/dirt/sand thing. That Anza gale force wind you camp in is nuts.

If you can draw a straight line and work a screw driver you can install sliders.

It's building the squire box that's hard... Well kinda. :wings:

same here...
slept in a sand storm in a tent - never again.
slept in a snow storm in the truck - awesome - no pain :)
no more reasons for me...

What would you estimate the weight of that would be?
I'm doing something similar but was thinking that timber drawers would be too heavy and was considering alu or steel sheet
