All great tips we really appreciate it! We are renting with Australian 4WD hire which does not seem to put any restrictions for places like Fraser Island. We did just get the new Hema road and 4WD atlas for which seems to be great!

What ever you do, do not rent from Australian 4WD Hire. They have a well documented history of ripping of customers with phoney charges and keeping the large deposits, vehicles without insurance, and poorly maintained . The Australian version of FTC Bureau of Consumer Protection is taking them to court. See these links or do some googling...

Feel free to PM if you want further details.

Although a little bit more expensive try one of the more established company's such as Britz or Apollo.

For trip planning have a look at https://cloud.hemaexplorer.com.au and click on Main Map. Also note that the first two weeks of July are Queensland school holidays so camp grounds etc. may be busy.

+1 to FlashKiwi's comment.

CANCEL YOUR BOOKING WITH THEM NOW!

As he says, they've got a court proven reputation of being crap to deal with and willing to fleece you for thousands of dollars.

FlashKiwi & Paddler Ed, Interesting you should bring up the Australia 4WD Hire comments as they recently called me and canceled my booking saying that the vehicle I had rented was damaged and no longer available. So I have booked a pop top Landcruiser with Apollo instead. Maybe a blessing in disguise based on your comments!!

Do you all think I should be booking camping in advance of the trip? will it be so busy I will not be able to find spots to camp or even grab a hotel in certain cases?

Thank you again!

You should be pretty good to turn up on the day - maybe have a rough idea (check on WikiCamps in advance) of where you want to go, and then about lunchtime give them a call to see how they're looking for that evening. We did that area a few years ago now, and at about the same time of year, and did it with no bookings. If you're travelling a long way off to somewhere, maybe check earlier in the day.

Glad to hear you've got the Apollo sorted - remember that it's not allowed on Fraser or Moreton Island. https://www.apollocamper.com/terms/APAUFLEXAPAU1920.pdf

I was there in '79 for 3 months. Once you got out of Sydney it was pristine aside from the skyscrapers of the Gold Coast.
Excellent air quality then. Even after all that time I was still getting into the wrong side.

You dodged a bullet there - great work! IIRC you will be travelling during the school holidays so some of the more popular areas (Fraser and Morton) may be booked. That said most places can find a spot for a self-contained vehicle for one night. Outside the urban areas you can try free camping (boondocking). Most of the smaller National Parks have camping, some are free and some are need to be booked online for a small fee. The WikiCamps app is a great resource. Put simply you will be fine!
