We have a 2012 with a factory drive train. No programmer, exhaust, etc. I run 37 12.50 Toyos and pull a 30 foot camper a lot in the summer. I would like to get a programmer to change the throttle profile and shift points someday but it runs around and tows fine as is. I am on the East Coast and don't have to pull 20 mile mountains at altitude so take that into account too. The suspension is simple and straightforward to work on and both Carli and Thuren have those trucks pretty well figured out. I don't have much seat time with the 6.4 but it is not enough to make me want to trade up.

It is if you want/need 900lb-ft of torque without totally destroying your fuel efficiency.

A 900lb-ft gasoline engine, FI or not, will produce a lot of horsepower...it will come with a tradeoff.
Most definitely don't need it. I tow 15 to 16k about twice a month, I towed the same weight with 520 ft lbs 15 years ago.
