Potential 4Runner Purchase - Need Guidance

..but the 3RZ has a substantial weight advantage over the 3VZ-E. I think hp peak numbers are the same. Torque is really close (177 ft/lbs for 3RZ, 180 ft/lbs for 3VZ-E). Most feel that the 3RZ moves a truck more effectively than the 3VZ-E.

Just watch out for strawberry milkshakes!

The 4Runner forum has a great breakdown of all the little bits you'll want to replace. There aren't that many, really.

For the price, you can't go wrong for a 4x4 Toyota in Colorado in the Fall.
Anything at that price on craigslist will likely be scary.
Do some preventive maintenance on it and drive it this winter.
You will know if the power is adequate for you or not.
Someone drove it in Colorado for 225k miles, it couldn't be that bad uphill.
I'd keep it stock, as bigger tires and all the "expo" junk will rob you of power.
If you get sick of it, you will most likely be able to sell it for more than you bought it for.

Agreed, auto is a bummer on the little motor, but at that price it seems like a no brainer. After owning a few 'Yotas on the front range, you should be able to get more than your money back no problem if you don't like it.

Leave it stock, drive the crap out of it, likely one of the cheaper offroad capable vehicles to own/run. Call me biased (because I am) but the 3rd gen 4Runner is probably my favorite vehicle I've ever owned.
