I think that a VW TDI would be a bit small for a CJ... great motors no doubt, but just a little short on displacement and power for a loaded Jeep.

Dave,
While power needs and requirements vary person to person I don't know that I would sell the VW motor out due to displacment alone.Compared to a 4.0 Jeep motor (best engine Jeep ever used IMHO) which is roughly 180hp and 210ftlbs (not exact just off the top of my balding head) I looked at the numbers on HPA's site.
100hp and 180ft-lbs stock. Not gonna shatter the planet but at around 40mpg or better I could learn to go slower. And...
A few simple mods and tuning can net in the ball park of 165hp and 280ft-lbs. With proper gearing and some common sense I would have to call those numbers acceptable for anything short of a mud racer, or 4 door JK with a full family and pulling a trailer. But for my expo and wheeling I could easily live with that. And then to be able to wheel all weekend on one tank of Biodiesel? Sold. I'll take two please.:sombrero:

No worries mate. I'm VERY familliar with VW diesel's having owned several Diesel Caddys (Rabbit P/U's) I know they can be made to make good power, I just find that bigger disp. diesels have better low end grunt wich IMO is what you need to get a big heavy 4x4 rolling. I LOVE the VW TD/I's in Suzuki's... They should have come that way from the factory :D ANd I hear ya about the milage they get. My mom currently has a new jetta Sport Wagon TDi and it's amazing how it pulls in 5th gear and still get's nearly 50mpg... My 22RE couldn't dp that idling all day rolling downhill HAHAHAHAHAHA. I also agree that the 4.0L was Jeep's best mtor, although I also gotta give love to the 318/5.2L V8 in the Grands cause I had a 318 in my old Dart (and still have oine in our rafting vshuttle van as it were...) and I loved that motor. Very simple and very reliable with good V8 power. IMO if there were more of them in Junkyards they'rde even more popular then a SBC 350. Add Magnum Heads and later EFI and they're just plain awesome motors IMO...

Anywho back to the CJ's. Anyone have any info/pics of that Tan CJ with the Cummins in it??? I've seen it in several mags but never enough said about it. I think a 4BT in a CJ8 would be about perfect for long trips eh.

Cheers

IIRC the VW diesel was used in CJ5s in the South African market. I still think it is too small for a larger, more modern Jeep though.

Mine again...

Guess I should add an updated pic or two of mine... Somehow I lost this thread...lol! Been pretty busy wrenching on mine but to be honest I haven't had a chance to take it out much. I brought it here to Germany with me a couple years ago and shortly afterwards the tranny blew. Been slowly...SO slowly putting it back together with some upgrades... ;)

totally forgot about starting this thread. still love seeing cj's built and used though!

i ended up going a different way, and bought an exploder. we had a kid and a cj just wasn't a reasonable idea for us anymore. thought about an xj, but couldn't get over the unibody issues. jeeps are twice as expensive out here as well. someday.

thanks for the bump heady!

keep them coming!

1973 AMC 360 4bbl, dana 20/30/44, 3.73 gears, 33x12.50s. will post pics tomorow of tire carrier and rear storage

Notes from my experience with a CJ5:
a. Seat selection is key, not much room between seat and wheel if not careful
b. Short wheel base is fun once you get used to it
c. If hard top is in place, watch your head when getting in
d. 1972 and earlier 5s have shorter wheel base by 5" I think. front sheet metal is shorter

Here is our set up. Have a drawer in the back of the Jeep for tools and spare parts. (camper is not "overland rated")
