Possible on a 2dr?

My solutions.

I have room behind the cooler for 5 gallons of water and can strap stuff to the ammo cans and Swag mount. I could strap another Action Packer or on either side or both.

Even if I carry 2 spares inside I still have room for the dog. I just need to clean it up, and stash the other stuff.

I could I drop the raft if I have too, and mount a platform.

Even with the rack, I have a Kwik Kamp tent trailer for more storage.

Picture is not mine.

The MORryde fender mounts from Retrofit also help.

I drove my 2 door TJ from the very top of AK to the very bottom of South America - 40,000 miles over two years.
It was my house.

I was only one person, though I did have passengers and luggage quite a few times, and it was no problem.

I removed the backseat and made a storage shelf, and there was plenty of room.

You will want to use backpacking style gear for the most part.

This is probably the most important part - think like a backpacker and you will be fine.

I had a bag of clothes, a box of food, a box of tools and spares, a small camp stove, 5 gal water jug and a tent & sleeping bag.
It was extremely liberating to have so little, and in fact some days now I miss it compared to the heavy JKU I have now.

You just can't beat a soft top 2-door Wrangler! I am sure there is one in my future, sometime.

Holy crap you fit two tires and the pooch?? It’s pretty cool seeing all you guys stuff so much in what I thought was a tiny trunk. Granted I feel like it still is but definitely more capable than I ever thought! What rack/tray is that on the swing out?

40,000 miles? Did you do that trip in one shot? That’s absolutely incredible man!! I can also relate to what you said about it being liberating to have so little. I’ve had times where I’ve been away from home with practically nothing, and something about it was nice. It was Just simple.

Just curious, why did you get the JKU instead of the jk 2dr?

So would you guys take a 2 door jeep over the new Tacoma’s? I know it’s apples to oranges but if you only had one vehicle what would you guys do? It’s more of a stretch for me to afford the taco. Possible, but I’ll have to cut back on some things.

Yep, I did the 40,000 miles in one two year trip :)

I have the JKU now because I wanted to be able to sleep in/on the vehicle. For Africa I figured it was much safer than a ground tent!

I also added a lot of modifications like a water tank and filtration system, fridge, solar panels, storage, etc. etc. and the extra space of the 4 doors made the most sense.

Well, if you need a truck, you need a truck! Absolutely better at hauling things. Not a Taco, but I sold my truck after ten plus good years to go with the Jeep 2-door. It was quite a change! Took some adjustments on my part.

As for the dog and/or more gear. In my TJ I made a rack that went between the roll bars and the ceiling, basically over the back seat. Gear goes under rack, add a dog bed and my dog would ride on rack. If my dog did not goes more gear on top of rack. Worked great.

I’ve only had one Toyota product and it was an FJ. I loved it, but I really missed my TJ. To me, there is nothing better than a Jeep. Endless parts. Endless configurations. A Tacoma is just a truck.

This.
If you ever have more than 2 people the 2 door Jeep loses 80% of its storage space.
If you will really never need the back seat there's plenty of room back there with some smart purchases and clever packing.

Nothing beats an open top Jeep. Sure, they're pretty miserable to drive when the weather sucks, but there's nothing like pulling the roof and doors off. I built a shelf in my TJ to use in the summer when I'm not at school. one day I'll actually build a real one out of something other than scrap plywood, but it really makes life so much easier. Since this picture I have 2 lower profile crates that slide under the shelf that replace the one tall one in the picture. Water slides in behind the spare fuel. No reason a shelf couldn't be built to only occupy half the rear storage area to give the doggo some space. Jeeping is cool because I get to carry luxuries I don't get backpacking, like a stove that does more than boil water and a tent and a chair :wings: This little Jeep has been taking me all over the east coast since I was 4 years old, and I'm not planning on changing that anytime soon :smiley_drive:

If your heart craves a 2 door Jeep, listen to it. You'll make it work, and it'll be a riot.
