Pioneer Tool Military Trailer Build

Excited to get this build started. Mainly because I don't see too many threads across the internet on these Pioneer Tool Trailers. There are a lot of unknowns that I haven't seen answered when it comes to this trailer so I want to go through this build and document everything down here so that in future years people can find this page and (hopefully) find it helpful for their build!

My experience with military trailers comes from having done a full restoration/rebuild on an M416 back in 2020. Occasionally I would see these Pioneer Tool Trailers come up for sale but no sooner did they hit the market they were almost instantly gone again. I recently was driving in the next town over from mine and saw this one for sale on the side of the road, bought it for $400! The first plan of action is to do an axle swap so it can accept modern wheels, replace the gull wing door brackets with gas struts for easy up and down, have it sandblasted and painted, and wire new lights and a battery system for my needs.

Went ahead and stripped the frame from all the old bolts, light wiring, and miscellaneous mounts for items. I managed to get the box off the frame to pull the frame out from under by using a jack and blocks and first jacking up the front onto the unistrut then going to the rear and doing the same. This box is seriously heavy and no joke, I ended up putting it back down onto the frame a day later as I will just have the sandblaster hit whatever they can underneath. While the box was off I got to see the wooden shims that allow the box to sit on top of the frame flush. Some of those were rotted so I replaced them with PVC material that I cut into the correct sized strips.8BD2FA2D-7E09-473B-A88A-4200F2F34E56.jpgD8355D63-752E-471C-9C11-E53238428DAC.jpg

This looks good so far. I've always thought these would be an interesting platform for an adventure trailer.

I am intrigued. Do you have an idea of what the final weight will be? What is your tow vehicle?
