Phantom Canyon and Shelf Road (Colorado)

While boondocking in our travel trailer near Penrose Colorado we use the OnX Offroad App to scout out some local trails. We decide to take Shelf road from Canon City, up to Cripple Creek Colorado. After exploring the old mining town of Cripple Creek, we take the historic scenic drive on Phantom Canyon Road back to Canon City. These roads are easily doable in a stock 4x4, but they are extremely scenic and a little nerve-racking at times. We take our Overland Ram, and a few friends join with a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon and a stock Jeep Liberty. Thanks for watching.

Cripple Creek is one of three mountain towns that have legal gambling in the state. Compared to Central City and Blackhawk, Cripple Creek hasn't gone completely "vegas" on the massive size of the casinos. I don't live too far from there and made that run in the past. The town of Victor where you got on Phantom Caynon lacks the casinos but still has the old mountain mining town charm.

We ran into the same problem looking for a place to eat in Cripple Creek and found a little local restaurant in Victor that was great.

Pretty much my back yard! Fun drive, that one and Gold Camp / Old Stage Road from Colorado Springs to Cripple Creek are fun, with detours up Almagre Mountain and a few other spots. Unfortunately there are always j@cka$$es out there ripping down the roads - have had many a glad-I-was-wearing-my-brown-pants moments coming up to the single-lane rock cuts with blind-alley turns when some (likely drunk) kid comes flying around the corner. Definitely avoid weekend mid-afternoons out there.
