Peg Hammer Options?

I'm interested in getting a dedicated peg hammer; too many improvised bashing items have been marred or destroyed... I am hoping people could share their experiences.

At the top of the watch list is the Snow Peak copper-head hammer, though I'm not yet ready to justify the cost. It also appears that SP recently released a steel-head version.

Has anyone had any experience with either version, that they could share?

Otherwise, the Coghlan's peg mallet would seem to be the best cheap option.

Any other recommended peg hammers?

Edit: I should add that weight/space is a consideration, as I'd like the option of also bringing it along for backpacking.

I have been using a rubber mallet for years, it has saved me many dollars on the cost of new pegs that a regular hammer would have destroyed.

I use a dead blow hammer from SK Tools that I've owned since the 90's. One side is rubber and the other is some kind of metal. I can't use snow peak stuff because it's incompatible with my ARB gear.

Thanks for the recommendations thus far. I should add that weight/space is a consideration, as I'd like the option of also bringing it along for backpacking.

I use the back side of the hatchet that I always take camping. I can't see hauling a piece of equipment just to drive tent pegs with.

Just my .02 worth.

Good advice, and I agree with the sentiment.

I haven't added a hatchet (or axe) to my supplies yet, as I've faired well with a full tang knife and a pocket saw.

X2 on a hatchet for backpacking. I carry an axe when the trip is Vic supported. And, I am sure I cannot go with SP beyound the use of my titanium spork; that is, when I find a "hardcore" salesman.

I picked up a SP with the steel head @ Sportsman Warehouse a couple months ago for $20, don't know if it was being blown out or mis-priced but I knew it was a good price. Like others have said it works well with their pegs and the hook comes in handy for pulling out the pegs. The copper head would IMO eventually mushroom out and is pretty pricey also. The Coghlans would be mostly worthless unless you are driving small aluminun pegs in soft soil but would be lighter to carry in a back pack. Not sure I would want to use the backside of an axe as a hammer murphys law being what it is.

Probably the cheapest solution is to get a old claw hammer and screw in a hook at the bottom of the handle for extracting tent pegs, not as cool as having a SP hammer though.

I have quite a few ARB products and a couple Snow Peak things and everyone gets along just fine, I think they are all so glad to be out in the wilderness that they put aside any differences they may have.

I have the REI version of the Coulans one.
have had it for twenty years used for backpacking and now for pounding stakes for my awning, scrapper/shower enclosure, and lantern stand.

It has never let me down.

I've always liked my Estwig rock hammer. Goes back to my youth as a 'rockhound'. Plus the pick always works great to pry up the stakes.

Might come in handy with zombies too!
