Overland on a Budget for the rest of us

I mostly use the van for camping with the family. Its not a truck, but has all the key elements for good time...
Work on it a bit with the kids

Then get out and enjoy

A lot of stuff is super cheap, but functional; $25 EZ-up from CL, $15 used folding table, free camp chairs left at a soccer tournament my buddy worked...

Some stuff is worth a bit more, like good sleeping pads and bags.
Sometimes you splurge - I have a 95qt Pelican and I love it (but even that I waited for a sale with free shipping and got it for $300).
But, the stuff is just to help you get out there a little more easily/comfortably...

Best thread on the forum. I had a mini van that had more backcountry miles on the spare than most glamor vehicles on this website have on their odo. Drive what you have and enjoy life

Well, there's that country song about havin a million dollars, a truck, a boat, and a Yetti 110 iced down with some silver bullets.....Now if that guy's a millionaire and he went Yetti instead of fridge....you see where I'm goin'. Just kiddin. I got one of them smaller Yetti coolers and I like it a ton!

He's a backwoods redneck, he don't know about overlanding and the fridge options available. BTW.....LOVE THAT SONG!

Sometimes I run the shell and rack for quick trips.

I was real close to getting a yeti 75. Ended up with a ARB 50 and I'm lovin it. Keep in mind I have two yeti's, a 25 and a 85(both discontinued) that I have had for many years. I'm keeping the 85 as my wife loves it and uses more than I do. But the 25 has no space once you add ice. I can see how quickly you can go down the rabbit hole. I now have and Arkpak and I'm shopping for solar. I am out almost every weekend so all gear gets used hard.

If someone is looking for a cheap alternative to pellican cases. You might check out military surplus stores. There is one near by that i have driven by and they had "A LOT" of foot locker size plastic cases. Not like the gorilla boxes you get at lowes but the water tight green military ones. I'd bet they are a fraction of the price of pellican. Seahorse cases are quite a bit cheaper than pellican too but i have no experience nor have i seen one in person to tell what the quality is like.

But to add to the discussion, i had an old suburban about 10 yrs ago. Think it was an 89, all stock 3rd row folded down into a bed and had a colman 5 day cooler and that thing was perfect for what i did. Fill it up with ice, beer and hot dogs and wed still had ice it it after sitting in the dark blue suburban in 100 degreese all week.
