On Wednesday, June 29 at 10am, Tepui Tents will officially launch our Kickstarter campaign for project “White Lightning,” our first hard shell tent ever, which we previewed at Overland Expo last month. The excitement has been crazy with everyone asking how to get one. This is it! ...at least for now. People were blown away, walking up and giving us credit card numbers, trying to get on a wait list. Be one of the first to purchase this innovative and revolutionary hard shell roof top tent.
.
It features a “best in class” super low profile of 8 inches, the first Rack ReadyTM design so you can bring your bikes, kayak or SUP and…we’re proud to say it is Made in the USA! We designed and built this innovative new hard shell tent, and with your support, we can finish out the industrial production molds and you can secure your brand new White Lightning RTT by Tepui.
.
And you are going to want to know this!! As part of the Kickstarter, we are offering just 15 White Lighting Tents at a special Early Bird price level! There are quite a few ways to support, but act quickly, as we have already received a lot of interest and know these Early Bird models are sure to be scooped up fast! Check out the Kickstarter for details on the specially priced models, and other support levels.

Here are some updates, with some answers to some questions that have come up.
.
These will be available on the Tepui website for pre-orders after the kickstarter campaign ends, probably mid-to-late July. The MSRP will be around $3800 but there is likely to be a pre-order discount although not as good as kickstarter. The kickstarter campaign is a great opportunity to get one of these for ~$1000 off MSRP!
.
The side rails are 54" center to center.
Load Capacity: Max 150lbs, but Tepui does not recommend more than 60lbs unless suspension and vehicle/rack are adequate.
Tent Weight: 150 lbs
Tent Canopy is 70D ripstop waterproof nylon
Shipping: $300 added to kickstarter pledge amount
Shipping from Hood River, OR so local pickups will likely not be available
.
After they become available on the website, there will likely be some customization options such as vinyl wraps, solar panels, and operable skylights.
.
Note: Made in the USA, Lowest profile hardshell on the market, interchangeable struts, rack-ready integrated side rails.

Not trying to troll, just an honest question, but what does an established company need to do a kickstarter for? Are there no profits from previous sales?

In my personal opinion it devalues a brand when they already have established product lines, and then go and do a kickstarter.

It's a way to market it and build interest with the pledge system that gets participants a huge discount.

Remember, outside of our little Overlanding world this is a very niche market. A Kickstarter campaign allows the market to dictate if demand is big enough to justify the risk. It is a smart move for a smaller company wanting to outwardly show it is listening to its customers' wishes without potentially bankrupting itself.

How many people can sleep in the tent? 2 adults & a child?

Most likely. 2 adults for sure. As the final production model gets revised dimensions could change slightly but I think you can safely plan on 2 adults and likely a bit more room for gear or a child.
Roughly equivalent to a Kukenam folding tent in sleeping size but slightly smaller. Kukenam measures 56x96" sleeping footprint. The White Lighting measures 79x54". Basically you'll lose a bit of head/foot room but the width only differs by 2". For comparison, the Ayer model which is the 2 person model folding tent is 84x48" and sleeps 2 adults comfortably, and the White Lighting adds 6" of width when compared to the Ayer.
.
But sleeping 2 adults and a child will be snug for sure, depending on the size of the adults.

The "White Lightning" Hardshell was extremely popular this past week at the Outdoor Retailer show in SLC, Utah. In fact it was given numerous BEST IN SHOW AWARDS. This is going to be an incredibly versatile tent with the integrated rack system. It definitely got a lot of attention!

Any updates on the hardshell? I'm in on the kickstarter campaign and haven't heard anything from Tepui in two months. Have they finalized the prototype?
