Odyssey vs. Diehard Platinum

I recently learned the same thing....the one I have is still going strong, but I wonder what sears will do if it dies before the warranty expires?

About 3 hours ago I went to Sears to buy a G31 Marine AGM DIEHARD. And they are now Discontinued!!
Seems to be more complicated than that. I spoke with Northstar a few months ago when I was trying to sort out some battery issues on my truck, and they told me that Sears was switching the Platinum AGM contract from Odyssey to Northtstar. When I went into my local Sears Auto Center in July or August to get a battery, there were no Odyssey AGMs available in the size I wanted (34M) and the clerk told me that this store would not be carrying them, but referred me to another Sears store that was supposed to have them in stock. Sears is doing some weird stuff. Example: My local store (a large store) is no longer stocking Craftsman mechanic's tools, except for warranty replacements (and they keep those items in back). If you want to buy a Craftsman wrench, you have to order online or go somewhere else.

Yep. Sears might be on the outs. They are switching to a 'Catalog' store from my observations. The local sears had ONE (1) Platinum 31M and would not discount it even though it was discontinued. Weird to me.

My Odyssey 2150 and Artex bracket arrived today and will be starting the install this weekend.

Pics coming

I assume these are going into your Tundra. Can you post a link for the Artex bracket? Thanks.

I have a Northstar 31M that I will be installing in my 2008 Tundra as the main battery, but I'm trying to figure out where to put a second battery.

Ah, Artec vs Artex! Artex makes marine and aviation safety stuff and I couldn't figure out how you were using one of their products to mount a battery. My Tundra is a CrewMax and I'm not willing to sacrifice the rear seat, so still looking for a mounting spot. There is no room under the hood for a second battery and still keep the truck smog legal in CA, so I may have to go under the cab or inside the rear fender. Hoping for something simpler. Thanks.

Just to update my Diehard Platinum issues...

1 of my 2 Diehard Platinums died over the holidays. It's less than 3 years old. Came out one morning and it was dead the day after a 100 mile trip. It's my starting battery and has never been deeply discharged. I went through the Odyssey recovery process about 8 months ago when the batteries kept resting at 12.3 overnight, but I didn't have a lot of faith that the issue was solved. My alternator will put out as high as 14.7 when needed so it's not a charging issue.

Since the Diehard Platinum is discontinued I was able to convince Sears to give me store credit, as I am done with their batteries and frankly, who knows how long the company will survive.

I decided not to go with another Odyssey built battery at this time and picked up an Optima yellow top. I know there are those that say Optima batteries are no good since they started building them in Mexico, but compared to some of the other options, they are readily available through many sellers, reasonably priced and I have had good luck with them in the past.

We will see how long the second Diehard Platinum lasts, I don't have high expectations.

My Diehard Platinum is now over four years old and has performed well but I think it is time to replace it.

I really like the new Odyssey I got a month back.

Yes, I need a cleanup on aisle seven :D
Looking at a kit from offgrid4x4 to fix that mess on it.

Hi Corey!

the Diehard I have is a rebadged Odyssey which Sears stopped offering a while back. It was used as my second battery for the fridge. I think mine did okay lasting this long but I'm not crazy about the charging requirements required to keep it really healthy. I may just buy one of the Costco Marine "deep cycle" batteries for $73 and replace it in three years.

My 2008 Huge Die Hard Platinum Marine is still rockin as my 2nd batt on the Power Wagon. I do take it out 1 or 2 times a year & hit it with the 60 amp charger & then hook it up to the Odyssey charger & let it go through the complete cycle of all the things it does.

My latest (and probably last) Odyssey 31 (two years old this month) gets charged on shore power every two to three weeks, on either an Odyssey 20 amp or a Ctek 7 amp. Neither one will get it above 12.65 OCV, but full charge is 12.85 OCV. Can't get there from here. For the first year+ I kept a detailed log of driving mileage and dates, how long parked, OCV under various conditions and after various periods of being parked. Battery OCV deteriorated fairly quickly from factory specs and settled around 12.65+/-. Why? Beats me. Tired of worrying about it. Two days ago I gave it an overnight conditioning cycle on the new Odyssey charger (I also have an "old" Odyssey 40 amp 3-bank) and it came off the charger at 12.45V.

It is probably worth trying the complete cycle of the "ODYSSEY® Battery Reconditioning Charge Procedure" as detailed in their PDF

Basically you drain the battery down to 10 volts then put it on your 40 amp charger at 14.7 volts until the battery hits 0 amps then let it sit for 8 - 10 hours at the 13.6V float. Make sure the battery is not hot during the charge cycle and repeat the cycle again if possible.

Been there, done that.
