Night photography with a point and shoot

Took a short one day one night trip to the Mogollon Rim this weekend with Joe (08whitexterra). Had all the camera gear along but only took a handful of shots. We were playing around with some night shots and decided to stretch the limits of our point and shoots.

Here are 3 from a Canon S95

1. Straight out of camera

Time 11:06pm
Exposure: 15s (that is the limit for this camera)
Aperture: f/3.5
ISO: 1600

2.

Time: 11:27pm
Exposure: 15s
Aperture: f/5.6
ISO: 1600

3.

Time: 11:55pm
Exposure: 15s
Aperture: f/5.6
ISO: 1000

None of these are print worthy but just some fun shots that actually impressed me with the little cameras ability.

I really like the two waterfalls, and am impressed by the possibilities offered by light painting at night of waterfalls.

I must give this a try!

The S95 is definitely impressive for 1600 iso... one can only imagine newer sensors will continue to improve.

these were taken with a Ricoh GRD, low ISO, long shutter speeds, much longer than 15s

Canon S95 shooter here as well. Mighty fine camera for the size! Here are photos from the Lantern parade. Fortunately, they've all got light sources in them to illuminate them. However it was still dark and windy out.
