Need ideas for rebuild

update....

i figured it was a good idea to replace the bearings and if I always have a set for each hub on hand, i need some kind of container to carry the bearings and grease and tools needed to do a bearing swap in case of a breakdown in the field. As it were, I have a couple of John Deere toolboxes that were designed to mount on the side of tractors using a special mounting bracket. I rigged up a rail along the front to hold the mounting brackets, and now i have secure onboard tool boxes that don't take any cargo room. one box has spare inner and outer bearings for both hub, a jar of grease, tire tool, and basic hand tools- screwdrivers, ratchet, sockets, wrenches, etc. The other box will hold tie downs, gloves, and other accessories that may be needed at any given time on a road trip.

got new rims installed and hauled the tagalong over to the MS Dept of Public Safety for inspection in order to apply for a VIN.

Luckily, I held off ordering a tent long enough for the smittybilt overlander xl GEN2 to be released, but it was on back order. It has several new upgrades from the GEN1, the best of which are the grey color and the zippered cover. While it was on back order, i re-installed the no-weld towers with unistrut cross rails and mounted the spare tire.

The Overlander XL GEN2 arrived yesterday... it was shipped via a curb-side carrier, so i had to meet the delivery guy up at the street and put the box on the trailer to bring it back down to the garage.

got the tent mounted yesterday evening, but ran out of daylight so I couldn't get any better pics. these will have to do until i do a load out in better lighting conditions.

Awesome man! For what it looked like at the start, he did a hell of a job on that frame. I only ever find projects where the rust is what's holding it all together. I have an Overlander XL gen 1 and ran a similar setup, until this month when I bought the annex. But if I didn't have the whole family and dog wanting to camp "upstairs" I was totally content with a low setup like that. Tows better too!

Oh and I meant to say 5x5.5" bolt pattern is what the Jeep CJs used forever, so if you need more rims you can search classifieds for those. Also, you should get a CJ to match the bolt pattern :LOL:

so, just got back from our road trip- 3,819 miles from vicksburg, ms to ouray/telluride, moab, denver, colorado springs, and back home. spent nights in palo duro canyon (tx), mesa verde np (co), and dead horse point sp (ut). the trailer was a bit overloaded, but pulled great. the downside was that it knocked 1/3 off my mpg. the weather was a bit hot in tx and ut, but fantastic in co.

overall the project has turned out great, and now i need to work on paring down the gear so i dont have to strap stuff on the rack next to the tent.

packed and ready to head out....
