My Journey

Hey Bob.....I've often wondered where you were and if you'd retired yet. Thanks for the offer but right now I'm headed to Montana and am currently in western Wyoming. Another time for sure.....

Clay.....you got me pegged.....

Brian.....I thought the same thing. I hope he runs like he's never run in his life and never turns back.....

So it was a year ago today that my best friend Montana passed away. I decided to spend the day in the city and I came across an interesting book while browsing shops....."Always By My Side" by Edward Grinnan. It looks like it could be a good read.....at least for me. This is from the book's back cover.....I sure can relate.....

In my last post, I got a bit ahead of myself. Prior to hitting the city, we spent a few days in the back country in Bridger-Teton National Forest. Here are truly some of the most magnificent mountains in the west, and possibly even in the world.....the Wind River Range of Wyoming. The drive along the Wind River Range is nothing short of spectacular.....

Off the highway and into the forest.....

The plan that I'd had in my head for days now was to relax next to waterfalls while soaking in steaming hot pools at the base of the falls, and showering under the steaming hot waters that flow from the rock cliffs.....

20180614_105417-1200x1600.jpg

Unfortunately the water level was so high that the hot pools were under water not to mention that wading across the creek would have been nearly impossible.....

20180614_105057-1600x1200.jpg

That forced us to patronize the commercial establishment further upstream which was such a huge disappointment. They control the water temperature, 93 degrees for this time of year (I prefer 104). And of course, this is where the crowds come. By the time I left it was much like any neighborhood swimming pool, kids everywhere, screaming.....just not what I had envisioned.....

20180614_112105-1600x1200.jpg

But I was clean.....we found a campsite.....

20180614_131501-1600x411.jpg

The dogs chased gophers and swam in the river.....we got some hiking in.....and once again I thought how thankful I am for these gifts.....

We can't do without our dogs. Our 8 year old yellow loves our camping trips. Can't wait to get back to Montana and Wyoming. Glad you survived the moron. Takes all kinds. Sitting at a concert here in Indiana and it is 93 at 6pm and would love to be in the Boulder River. Keep the Montana reports coming. And yes the Wind River Range all the way up and around yo Green River Lake campground. jd

JD.....93 in Indiana does not sound fun. Here in Wyoming it's around 40 in the morning and cool afternoons.....

Ashton.....here's some more pictures. This was a great area for the Panorama feature on my Galaxy S9+. This particular area is called Granite Creek but you can't go wrong anywhere in the Wind River Range. You'll avoid the crowds of the Teton range, which are amazing as well.....

We are still hanging out in the city and fortunate to have friends here. Back on the road shortly.....

Great px! Went to Best Buy a couple days ago and looked at the S-9+. Impressed w/ photo attributes! Going back to buy it! My S-5 has cracked glass and in general pretty beat up. Hope I can take better care of this one. Maybe use my Canon SLR w/prime lenses a little less.

ROKTAXI.....after years of being an iPhone user, I made the switch from an iPhone 7 to the Galaxy S9+ and after maybe a month, give or take, of struggling with the change, I'm never looking back. I love this new phone.....

So I've been hanging out with friends in Jackson Hole (or maybe you just call it Jackson), Wyoming. These are friends I've made through my travels along the way, over the years. This is one aspect of travel that is really rewarding.....time spent with friends is great when you spend so many hours, days, weeks alone....

20180615_130053-1200x1600.jpg

Typically when I visit Jackson Hole I'll post pictures of the famed antler arches, or the crowded streets.....the typical stuff for sure. But this visit I found something that really amazed me.....vertical gardening.....

20180616_143143-1600x1200.jpg

Within this building is an actual farm which grows organic crops year round without using soil (as I was told). I missed the tour slots but I thought this concept to be so cool.....

20180616_143233-1600x1200.jpg

I was told that they have the equivalent of five acres of crops growing within the building, year round, and that they currently sell to twenty of the food establishments within Jackson Hole, and this base of customers continues to grow.....

20180616_143251-1600x1200.jpg

I love seeing the work of the out of the box thinkers.....I think it's pretty damn impressive.....

Lots of rain the past few days.....it's looking like a rest day.....we're all soaked and just laying around.....

From Jackson Hole, Wyoming we began our journey north to Montana. Just on the northern outskirts of Jackson Hole is the National Elk Refuge, which would be our first stop of many stops that day.....

20180617_082941-1600x645.jpg

Elk descend from the higher elevations as winter approaches, spend their winter feeding here, and each year they'll return to the higher elevations of the mountains in April and May. A typical season will find 5,000 elk wintering here, but the number can go as high as 7,000. It's a beautiful place to start one's day.....

20180617_083005-1600x1200.jpg

We continued north and entered Grand Teton National Park at the Moose Junction entrance. Once again I had plans, but the magnificent mix of sky and mountains quickly changed them.....

20180617_084345-1600x347.jpg

20180617_085529-1600x506.jpg

My plan was to drive through the park nonstop....I've been here many times.....and I've climbed these peaks.....I felt as though I already knew this place.....

20180617_091348-1600x414.jpg

20180617_091450-1600x1200.jpg

But this trip had an amazing sky attached to the mountains....the sky was turbulent, almost violent seeming, and so fluid.....it seemed to change by the minute and presented the mountains in a new way I had never seen before.....

20180617_092033-1600x1200.jpg

20180617_092054-1600x429.jpg

I stopped often, I took a billion pictures.....In my head I debated which is more beautiful.....the Tetons or the Wind River mountains.....and I decided who cares.....

20180617_095235-1600x1200.jpg

We continued north out of the Tetons.....

20180617_111749-1200x1600.jpg

We got some hiking in before heading into Yellowstone National Park.....

20180617_114249-1600x1200.jpg

The weather continued to be unsettled and we had a good day in the park. No bears sighted this time but plenty of other wildlife....

20180617_141539-1600x1200.jpg

20180617_142755-1600x1200.jpg

The water levels are extremely high and rain continues to fall.....

20180617_143945-1600x1200.jpg

It's really beautiful when everything is so green.....

20180617_142522-1600x315.jpg

We camped north of the park along the Yellowstone River.....

This will be last the post for a few months. A friend of mine has purchased a horse ranch in Montana and she's asked me to help her get it back into shape. Hope everyone enjoyed the narrative.....looking forward to hanging out in Montana.....
