My Journey

In an earlier post I spoke about the stories within the story.....this is some of what I was referring to.....

20200114_142650-1200x2469.jpg

The desert sand dunes are amazing note takers and when you spend a lot of time wandering in the dunes many things are revealed.....

20200117_085143-1200x2469.jpg

The tracks of the animals that pass through the desert are just one of many.....

20200117_083102-1200x2469.jpg

It's not only the animals that leave their tracks in the sand. Here near the border people also pass through the dunes. I came across this shoe in the sands.....maybe not more than a half mile north of the border wall. The toe of the shoe pointed north to the U.S. ..... and I'm guessing to a better life. I wondered did this person make it to America.....did their life change forever.....

20200118_113212-1200x2469.jpg

Here under a large desert plant I found several backpacks.....each contained a change of clothes, a baseball cap, a toothbrush and a few personal items.....again I wondered did these people make it to a better, safer place.....America.....

20200119_164146-2469x1200.jpg

I found maybe a half dozen of these homemade pads strewn about the dunes. In my conversation with the federal agent he told me about these and how migrants used these makeshift pads and carried up to 60 pounds of drugs across the border in exchange for a discount to their smugglers fees.....

20200118_113242-1200x2469.jpg

The desert is also filled with lots of trash.....my guess is that most of it originates from the interstate. The desert bushes act like giant lungs and snag the majority of the trash into their limbs. I lost count on the number of bags that I filled.....and it really doesn't matter anyhow.....

20200122_093311-1200x2469.jpg

I came across this dead scorpion.....it's the first I've seen in the desert.....

20200120_154532-2469x1200.jpg

And then there's the skull of a desert lizard impaled on the sharp thorn of a desert bush. My son told me about a bird that impales its catch on thorns and wire fences.....it's called a Shirke. I Googled it and indeed it does.....

20200122_091609-1200x2469.jpg

All of these pictures tell a story.....you see there's just so much going on out here in the desert. It's not difficult to understand why so many people become infatuated with the desert.....it's amazing.....

Compelled to say thank you for your last set of photos..absolutely wonderful and real depiction of desert life..you have an eye for the obvious and oft overlooked..and talent to describe what the eye sees so nothing is overlooked.

To me, Jerry posting how Jerry feels is just how it should be.
Don't live / write / post / whatever in a way you think others want you to.
Be You - be Yourself - be Jerry.

And courage comes in many, many shapes and forms.

Yours is obvious.

Hi Jerry

Having lost our second travel/camping companion last November, I can truly feel the joy you get from being with your dogs and the pain that comes with having to make very difficult decisions.
Stay strong and trust that you will know what to do when the time comes.

Also know that I enjoy reading and seeing the American West through your eyes.

Hang in there.........

I concur, dont change a thing.

At my previous job, I actually had a time blocked out every Monday morning just for this,

I spent the last week volunteering as medical for a sled dog race,

It is one of my favorite events,

I think you would of loved it

That would have been awesome.

I am going to Breckenridge in March with the family and we are going to do a dog sled excursion.

PS Jerry, don't change a thing unless it is more posts.

I just finished a quick post about it, check it out. Ask any questions you may have.
The sled dogs truly love to pull, Its an amazing art. I recommend anyone who can check out a sled dog race.

In years past I would volunteer at sled dog races in the Colorado high country. Frequently working at the starting line and helping handle teams. Great experience and the dogs were so much fun. The enthusiasm for running and pulling made it worth the trip. My sidekick in those days was a 125 lb Malamute named Nikki. He loved to hang out at the races and talk to the dogs and cheer them on.

Hey guys.....thanks for the feedback. I'm just always curious what people are thinking. I'm always posting.....

As I've said, the sand dunes are a truly amazing place to hang out and it's difficult for me (us) to get our fill of it. But one day while hanging out at the camper I decided that we needed to check out this small mountain just to the east of our campsite. Pilot Knob (876'), and with only 605' of prominence, wasn't going to be much of a climb, but it still looked like a lot of fun.....

There are several obvious unchallenging routes (trails) to the summit of this small mountain (which we used on our descent).....there are also challenging ways to the summit as well.....

20200121_124836-778x1600.jpg

It was steep, the rock was solid.....it was a ton of fun. For me there was an additional challenge.....I climbed it while buzzed on muscle relaxers. I haven't much mentioned it but I was (still am) suffering from that damn tooth extraction. If you haven't seen "About Schmidt" with Jack Nicholson, you sure should. He's me in that movie.....watch the movie.....you'll know what I mean.....

20200121_122211-778x1600.jpg

After less than an hour of scrambling we attained a ridgeline.....

20200121_133308-778x1600.jpg

.....and then scampered towards the summit.....

20200121_135835-778x1600.jpg

20200121_135400-1600x778.jpg

Here on the summit it was yet another place to contemplate life.....I'm afraid there is no escaping it.....

20200121_140544-1600x778.jpg

20200121_140510-778x1600.jpg

The views up there were sensational.....looking east across the Colorado River lies Arizona, California to the west and north, and looking south across the border wall lies Mexico.....

20200121_135417-1600x778.jpg

A man really doesn't have to travel high or far to explore this wonderful world.....
