My Journey

pkripper.....probably more appropriate to say Beautiful place ! ..... thanks for following along.....

And finally my last post about this beautiful place.....The Woodbury Desert Study Area was a place within a place.....

20211221_103729_copy_1200x583.jpg

Since I rarely take the time nor make any effort at supplying local information about the places that we visit, I love posting pictures of these signs.....

20211221_102509_copy_1200x2469.jpg

They take out so much of the effort of posting something meaningful.....there's little to be learned from these posts of mine without these signs.....no debating that fact.....

20211221_102526_copy_1200x2469.jpg

There were several varieties of desert flowers blooming during our stay.....I guess not affected by the freezing night-time temperatures.....

20211224_085353_copy_1200x2469.jpg

The Desert Tortoise.....I sure wish I could say that I saw one.....but they seem to spend nearly their entire lives underground.....so all you get is yet another sign.....

20211221_103835_copy_1200x2469.jpg

What wonderful night skies we had here (most of the time that is).....

I always enjoy your updates. We’re in the process of planning our summer travels. Headed to your neck of the woods, Montana! I just read an article in the Colorado Sun that doesn’t bode well for our lifestyle.

Ghostdancer.....I've certainly become disillusioned with the lifestyle.....I started truck camping in July, 2005 when I purchased my BigFoot.....the changes that I've seen over the years are quite depressing. I liked it better when it was called camping.....this whole overlanding thing is just a joke to me. People going on 3 day weekend expeditions.....well, what can you say.....and then there's all the homeless people that have moved out into the free lands as well.....ugh.....and thank you for the generous comment.....

One day while traveling here I came across the sign for the Bloomington Cave.....Utahs' fifth longest cave at 1.39 miles.....and after a bit of reserach, I found out that I would need a free permit from the BLM office located in St. George, Utah if I wanted to explore it (and of course I did).....

20211221_102100_copy_1200x583.jpg

I made a call into the BLM office, left a message on the recorder, and three days later got my return call. The man on the other end of the line said "sure, come on in and I'll get you the permit".....so off we went to St. George, Utah making a brief stop at this service station on the Piaute Indian Reservation. This is probably the only service station that I've seen lately with gas lines.....apparently everyone wanting to avoid the taxes (I'm assuming that's why diesel & gasoline were 50 cents less here than anywhere else around).....I filled up the truck and the Jeep as well.....found myself wishing that my tanks were on empty.....

20211227_151604_copy_1200x583.jpg

Once at the BLM office a stern woman says "you should have filled out your permit application on line".....hmmmmm.....then she says "you should have registered three days in advance".....hmmmmm.....then she says "you need a helmet" (this is probably the only time I've traveled without my helmet).....then she says "you need at least 3 people in your party to enter the cave".....hmmmmm.....this was not going well.....I left without a permit that day.....on the way out the door I saw the guy that I spoke with on the phone.....and I said "what a **********" and he said "yea".....

20211222_071219_copy_1200x583.jpg

Sometimes life can be difficult and sometimes people can be as well.....we returned to this place void of all people & peoples' problems as well.....and the resting heart rate fell quickly.....

20211225_065830_copy_1200x583.jpg

I hated leaving here.....I really did.....I think I learned a lot here.....this place was good to me.....I felt improved.....

20211221_103820_copy_1200x2469.jpg

Regretfully we drove south.....back out onto the interstate.....the last three months or so we have lived mostly void of mankind.....things were about to change drastically.....

FYI, regarding the signpost pertaining to "Shallow Seas", some of the limestones now outcropping in the Beaver Dam Mountains of SW Utah are the lateral equivalents of the Mississippian Period (323 to 359 million year old) Madison and Mission Canyon limestones which so prominently outcrop in central and western Montana, including the ice caves and cascading spring in the Big Snowys. Believe you wrote about and posted on some exploration of a cave or two in the Uintas of northern Utah which were in Madison/Mission Canyon carbonates. In southern UT and in AZ, including the Grand Canyon, the Mississippian horizon is known as the Redwall Limestone. I think we discussed the wide lateral extent of Mississippian carbonates in the West, and there you are seeing them pretty much everywhere you wander.

Of course just like many have said I truly enjoy your posts and get a little concerned when we don’t hear from you in a while.

I had a thought about your concern for leaving your dogs while you out climbing. Get some sort of monitor that calls when when there’s unusual activity in the camper. Also you could call them to just hear your voice. I hope your not anti smartphone.

I really like when you post about places that I’m not familiar with as it keeps the desire for travel in me. But my future for long distance drivingmay be coming to an end or severely limited. I fall asleep at the wheel too often. Even loaded up with coffee I’m struggling. It’s always very brief and I’ve rarely left my lane. It’s now called “driving while sleep impaired”.

I dispute that front range noise about boondock camping come to and end. It’s big city BS. Overreacting I say. Still
plenty of quiet places left. You seem to find interesting places regularly.

I am heading out to Moab in a couple weeks. I don’t expect much quiet there but I’ll be mountain biking with friends. Two wheel therapy.

Oh yes, not just n the US "Overlanding" has become somewhat different from 5-7 years ago.. I just stay away from people when I go out and try to enjoy my small place under the moon. Don't let the negative win from all the positive that still out there.

Enjoy !

(hug the dogs please..)

Jerry,

Have you ever thought about taking your travels East to new areas as you have already covered most the West several times over?

Foy.....thanks for posting that.....I forgot about you being the other way that people can learn something from visiting my thread.....always grateful for you & the informative signs as well.....

Ace.....thanks so much for that.....i was just thinking while reading your post how pleased that I am that I had coffee with you that morning as I passed through Colorado.....I wish I had it in me to do those things more often. And no I'm not anti smartphone.....of course I was when they first came out but now I wonder how I lived without one.....

My thoughts on the crowds.....not near so large nor as bad as they were last year but there's a whole new breed of people out here now. For an example, someone came in a few nights ago and dumped their RV black tank (& probably grey as well) in the paved parking lot (I won't post a picture of that mess).....there is a free dump station approximately five miles from here.....what more needs to be said.....

Another one is politics.....people need to leave their politics at home.....I don't care who people like.....this has become way too common.....

20220203_085237_copy_1600x778.jpg

vintageracer.....when you say east I'm assuming that you're referring to the east coast of the United States ? I'm actually a transplant from the east coast so I know it really well. I've camped in and hiked the Appalachian Mountains for decades.....I've explored ship wrecks from Key West and up the entire Atlantic coast. I've traveled as far north as the road would go in northeast Canada (Labrador).....I've winter climbed & ice climbed in the Adirondacks of New York.....I have so many fond memories of the east but now I only return to visit with my special people.....

If you mean east like in Asia ? Here's what's on my mind.....I really want to return to Nepal and I have penciled in a climbing trip for October 2022. There's a peak there called Mera Peak (21,247') .....it's often called a treking peak or a beginners' peak as it is not technically difficult to climb.....I prefer to call it an ending peak as no doubt it will be one of the last peaks that I'll attempt to climb.....it's roughly an 80 mile roundtrip hike to the summit and typically takes a few weeks to climb.....30 to 45 degree slopes at this point in my life still seem doable.....

Arjan.....I'll be off the road soon enough.....that will do me a world of good. They're not all bad out here.....and I'm certainly nothing special.....here's a story of a homeless woman and her dog that I just met a few days ago.....just as sweet a person as you'll ever want to meet.....just down on her luck.....

It was early in the morning and I was just preparing my first mug of coffee and the sun had just appeared over the mountain and had barely reflected over the lakes' smooth surface when I heard that sound.....it was this rustling sound.....it was a sound that I was not familiar with.....

20220204_100223_copy_1600x3291.jpg

I lifted the kitchen blind and saw a woman pulling her suitcase in one hand.....a Siberian Husky on leash on the other.....

20220204_100421_copy_1600x3291.jpg

Geez.....I immediately left the camper to ask if she needed help but she said she was fine and off she went to wherever it was she was going.....

20220204_100642_copy_1600x3291.jpg

An hour later.....while reading my book in the comforts of the camper I heard the same unmistakable sound yet again.....

20220204_100842_copy_1600x3291.jpg

That sound didn't leave my head that morning and reading that book became nearly impossible.....so I followed her tracks with a bag filled with assorted foods & dog treats.....

20220204_100728_copy_1600x778.jpg

Her trail led me to a hidden spot along the edge of the lake.....it was here that she made her home.....

20220204_101005_copy_1600x778.jpg

I wanted not to startle her so I was very cautious and when I finally saw her I asked for permission to come down.....

20220204_100951_copy_1600x3291.jpg

She turned out to be a wonderful person.....she had the most beautiful Polish accent (she told me that she was originally from Poland.....I guessed Switzerland).....

20220204_100956_copy_1600x3291.jpg

And I was reminded once again not to judge a book by its' cover.....being homeless doesn't necessarily make someone a bad person.....

Jerry,

I apologize for not being more specific with regards to my suggestion of "East"!

I was thinking East of the Rockies and West of the Mississippi River. This is still "somewhat" convenient to your new home base of Montana.

There are so many neat places from the High Plains of Eastern Montana, to the Badlands, the prairies of the Midwest, the states Arkansas and Missouri, the Louisiana Bayou, East Texas, South Texas, Southwest Texas and more.

So much potentially new for you to see if you have never travelled this area AND you can to continue to entice all of to git out and see our world called the USA!

I thought about you after seeing this pic the other day.
Have you ever been through Ouray this time of year?

vintageracer.....that's an area that I have rarely visited.....as a matter of fact, I've always seen it as just land that I pass through to get where I'm going. That being said, after I finished reading Talking to the Moon by John Joseph Mathews (awesome book !) I seriously gave thought to moving to the Ozarks and using that place as my base camp. I got onto Zillow and looked for cabins.....I was shocked at how cheap the housing was in the Ozarks compared to most liveable places in Montana. That idea vanished fairly quickly though.....I now have plans to explore more of Montana this summer.....20 years of roaming there and still more to see.....like the saying goes....."the mountains are calling" .....

tgil.....nope.....my experiences on ice are fairly limited and were mostly in the northeast of the U.S., Argentina and Chile.....

I'll get back to my trip reporting soon enough but here's a follow-up to yesterdays' post.....I awoke this morning to a beautiful, bright sunrise over the lake.....stepped outside to take a quick photo.....

20220208_064801_copy_1200x583.jpg

As I looked down the gravel road I saw her again.....

20220208_064805_copy_1200x2469.jpg

I'll tell you straight up here that it made my heart ache.....once again I was unsettled and soon enough I packed another bag with groceries and dog treats.....

20220208_074033_copy_1200x2469.jpg

Then I too headed down the same road for a visit.....

20220203_090732_copy_1600x778_copy_1200x583.jpg

I caught the early morning rays reflecting off of the calm lakes surface.....it was an extraordinary sight for sure.....I never tire of this wonderful sight.....

20220208_080240_copy_1200x583.jpg

20220208_080233_copy_1200x2469.jpg

I left the road behind and hiked down the trail towards her campsite.....

20220207_145741_copy_1200x337.jpg

I called out her name and out they (her & her dog Thunder) came from behind that large boulder where she's made their camp and we talked for an hour and she shared her story.....

20220207_150618_copy_1200x2469.jpg

I left with her battery pack as I agreed to charge it in my camper.....I returned a few hours later and we said the goodbyes.....at least now she'll have cell service and a bit more food.....

20220208_085947_copy_1200x583.jpg

It's times like these that just make me so thankful.....for everything.....

Beautiful photos as always. It is sad to see people struggle. Hard to believe someone would be living in the middle of nowhere. It always warms my heart when you help others. I agree with you when it comes to Foy. He adds a lot to your posts. He also is the one person who has provide me with amazing places to visit in Montana. Always love pictures of the dogs. Safe travels. JD

JD.....if you watch YouTube videos, check out Jimmy Darts.....he does some great YouTube Shorts videos with homeless people.....I've picked up on his ideas this winter and have had some fun with it. It brings back memories of helping the migrants a few years ago.....thanks.....

2021 ended just the way I wanted it to.....climbing mountains and hanging out with dogs in the wilderness.....2022 started out in sharp contrast to the last months of 2021.....
