My Journey

tgil.....yep I sure do love that picture as well.....

JD.....I agree.....

Alan.....I don't yet know the answer to your question but I do have some ideas.....and yea, "I am not one".....

It's almost hard to believe that we've spent nearly 2 months camped here along the western shores of Lake Mead.....but the downtime has been well worth it since we were able to add Trapper to our team.....

20210228_095949.jpg

Since Trapper has come aboard, we have attempted to climb a nearby peak 3 times, but she just wasn't able to make the trek all the way to the summit.....that was probably a good thing considering my nagging injury.....but the 4th attempt was golden.....Trapper started the day with some strengthening exercises.....strength is always an asset to the mountaineer.....

.....and then Tanner decided to join in.....

20210303_140908_copy_1600x900.jpg

We got a fairly early start that day.....

20210211_113623_copy_1600x416.jpg

......while the air was still cool and in the open Jeep the ride to our starting point was downright cold.....

20210211_113641_copy_1600x1200.jpg

No trails to the summit so we meandered up various washes and criss crossed over multiple hillsides.....

20210211_115352_copy_1600x2133.jpg

Tanner stumbled across this snake skin lying in the volcanic rock.....it was interesting to see the way he jumped. His reaction startled me and I thought maybe it was our first rattler of the season but thankfully no.....just an old skin.....

20210302_090345_copy_1600x2844.jpg

It was beautiful up there on the summit of Lava Butte (2,871').....just me and my best friends.....

20210302_094358_copy_1600x394.jpg

Certainly not a big peak but a peak none the less. I thought that Trapper.....at five and one half months of age.....performed spectacularly. We covered eight and one half miles combined with 1,800' of elevation gain over some very rugged ground.....

20210302_094415_copy_1600x330.jpg

We hung out on the summit for maybe 30 minutes.....

20210302_094112_copy_1600x2844.jpg

We signed the summit log with our names & date.....and from where we come from as well.....

20210302_094319_copy_1600x2844.jpg

Trapper looked up to Tanner and my guess is that she was saying "you're right Tanner.....this is gonna be a wild ride".....

20210302_094109_copy_1600x2844.jpg

It was a long slog down that mountain.....the large volcanic boulders did no good for my somewhat healed pulled groin muscle.....back at the campsite now we decided to cool down & clean up in the lake.....

20210302_144210_copy_1600x900.jpg

20210302_144130_copy_1600x2844.jpg

Tanner always lags behind when it's time to leave the lake.....Trapper always refuses to leave until Tanner joins along.....

20210302_145708_copy_1600x2844.jpg

Afterwards Trapper went for a visit with the neighbors and grabbed a cold beer.....

20210303_152539_copy_1600x900.jpg

We watched the sky as it darkened from the campers kitchen window.....

20210228_055356_copy_1600x900.jpg

And we got those sleepy eyes.....

20210228_055131_copy_1600x900.jpg

And we all slept well that night along the western shores of Lake Mead.....

My daughter has been hounding (pun intended) me to get Scout a playmate. These pics of Trapper are not helping my dogged (see what I did there) resistance in the matter!

buenavides.....the dogs of course love the lifestyle and yea the views are pretty nice.....thanks.....

Now here's a post that might surprise you.....but then maybe not all.....

Most days here there's some sort of rescue.....typically it's vehicles driven by people making bad decisions.....and yes, on a daily basis.....

20210122_100948_copy_1600x900.jpg

Now I'm all in on Paying It Forward but sometimes not so much. This particular guy couldn't bother to say good morning nor could he could bother to respond to my question "how's the fishing ?"......and so it was that when it was time to leave, he (or his insurance company) paid the minimum $700 tow fee to get yanked out.....

20210122_100847_copy_1600x900.jpg

The next story here is that the Sprinter van drove right into the deep sand without once stepping out to check the road. His poor judgement caused quite the scene.....first a 4 x 4 truck tried to pull him out but that truck got stuck too. I pulled the truck out & this white Jeep got the Sprinter van.....

These guys are a double dipper.....

20210308_153840_copy_1600x900.jpg

20210308_153837_copy_1600x900.jpg

I tried yanking the truck out with no success so I texted my Jeep buddy and he came right down to the lakes edge. With both our Jeeps pulling we were able to get that guy out.....but it was not easy.....

20210308_153700_copy_1600x900.jpg

I called this guy a double dipper cause my Jeep buddy told me that he'd pulled the same guy out just the week before.....

20210308_153700_copy_1600x900.jpg

Then there was the knock at the door one late, very windy evening.....a kayaker struggled to make it back to shore and asked for my assistance to retrieve his kayak as he said he lacked the strength to get it back to his campsite.....

20210308_175850_copy_1600x900.jpg

With that muscle pull of mine I decided that the Jeep was the way to go.....a little difficult staying on the road since I really couldn't see a thing.....but we got him home too. Like I said.....just a daily event here at the western shores of Lake Mead.....

There is a YT channel called Matt's Off Road Recovery, he make a living from pulling people out of places they should have avoided. I help most folks, but I once told a couple of guys " I barely made it out" one of them looked at me like I was lying, I saw that truck a few days later, the front bumper was pulled out about a foot...I guess they found out I spoke the truth.

Double Dipper and the first guy make me chuckle. How hard is it to be cordial? How many times does it take, getting stuck, before you learn to get out and check? Obviously more than twice, for some!

It is amazing how unfriendly people can be. I am glad you let that guy spend the $700.

I really like Matt's channel. I am close to wanting to buy a shirt. I guess I am becoming a fan.

Those dogs have become fast friends. Just love watching each react to the other. Camped on the bay in Corpus Christi, TX, 25+ winds with higher gusts. Doesn't take long for Sarah to walk to the camper door. She had had enough of the wind.

Probably a lot cheaper to buy one than be handed one.
