My fg84 Build, ironing out issues & new questions.

I know the wheels are technically safe but that's not good enough if you have a prang.

This is something that many people miss.
If any part of your truck is not "legal" you can potentially have your insurance not pay out in the case of an accident. That could be serious bucks!

Questions

Truck has been in the workshop for a while but rear canopy fabrication should start in the next few months for a future trip around aus.

Few new things I would like to investigate.

- Can anyone recommend a solution to blocking some sound out of the cab from the crawl through?
I Was thinking a roll down shutter or slider doors, seems to be a fair bit of road noise comes from the crawl through and on long trips it would be good to close the cab off.

- eng SYS - In the 4500km I have done in the truck, only 3-4 random times as I'm cruising at highway speeds, engine power cuts out completely for a few seconds and a red ENG SYS? (from memory, it has been a while) light comes up on the speedo. It just goes into idling and you will be rolling for a few seconds at 80-100 kmh then the light goes off and you can accelerate again as normal. Has anyone experienced this or have any ideas?

- Steering play - There is allot of play in my steering wheel and I find myself constantly correcting the bump steer or controlling the float across the lane, Is this normal for a truck thats done 35,000km, Is there something I should replace or look into, my steering wheel is also not straight when the truck is driving straight but figure this can be adjusted fairly easily?

- Seats, I spent a couple of days trying to adapt a set of holden VE2 front seats to the truck, and after a fair bit of welding and playing around decided to scrap it, even with no suspension base and the electric tilt on the seat at the lowest setting the seat sat to high compared to the standard seat, It just did not feel right for me, while i could push the clutch in fully, it felt to high and tilted forward. Will be digging through the forums to see what other people have adapted, but for now its back to standard seats. Wondering if anyone has installed a standard suspension seat but for the passenger?

The first thing I should question is the type of truck that you have....
Your thread description implies that it is a FG84, but it looks like a FGB71 to me.

That may be more of a challenge than you think, as base type noises are often difficult to muffle.
As a quick test you could make up a piece of plywood that covers the pass-thru and do a before and after test. The board would need to go inside the cab, not inside the camper.
I would also suggest using a Digital Sound Level Meter for this kind of test, as it rules out the human "I think it is better" factor. If that works then you can spend more time finding a more permanent option.

Recover the engine fault codes that were generated. That should point you in the right direction. The manual will explain how to read the blink codes.
Intermittent faults can be very tricky to find, but this sounds like it might be a sensor or electrical connection to a sensor.

Bump steer can be a scary thing and something that you will probably want to address. The ATW suspension modifications you have on your truck should be fine, but there may be more sideways movement in the tyres you are now using, as these are a "floatation tyre" and not as laterally stable as a light truck tyre (like the Toyo M608Z).
The truck seems to be relatively new, so it is unlikely that there are worn out steering components, so it might be worth a trip to a steering specialist to see if something is simply out of adjustment.
The steering wheel position is just something you have to deal with in a Canter, as there is no means of adjusting this in the linkages. The way most square up the wheel is to remove the steering wheel and reposition it on the spline. If you are going to do this yourself, I strongly suggest disconnecting the battery, so that you do not accidentally trigger the air bag (should your truck have them).

Be mindfull that making any modification to the seating will require an engineering certificate.
From memory, there needs to be a minimum distance between the seat swab and the roof for it to be ADR compliant. If you want to fit a bucket on the passenger's side you will likely block access to the engine via the engine hatch. Personally, I do not see this as an issue, but some might.
I have Stratos suspension seats in my FG84, so it can definitely be done. If you have the opportunity, take a look at how these are mounted, as it will give you a better idea of how you could do it yourself.

Hi, I have the exact same Fuso Canter ATW truck... I'm only just looking at how I'm going to do my conversions, so reading your posts will certainly be a great start. Cheers Mark from Adelaide

We also have a FG84 with crawl thru and the way we stop 99% of the noise and heat from entering the drivers cabin ,was to velcro around the opening .Then we had a double sided canvas cover made filled with 30mm of wading with stitching across the area to help hold the wadding in place and velcro stitched to the surrounding edge. This makes it easy to removed and reset in place, it also keeps the air con working better smaller area to fill. Also it helps motorhome climate control easy to manage in summer and winter.
