I'd like to do the same thing but put some type of swivel on the arm. here in the desert we need shade and it would be nice to use it as a windbrake.

I dont have a swival on my swing arm ,but i use a couple of 6'x10' lite wieght nylon home canapy side shades. I can enclose the whole awning area for camping .They work pretty good If its a strong wind say 20 to 30 mpg it acts like a sail. And can be dangerous. At Pins the steady night 30 mph ocean winds and the sand was a test with only sand to anchor the guy line., Just had to reset the lines more often.
