Some little adventures in the past few days, went offroading in the hassayampa river canyon, and then the next day a tire blew out.

Cylinder 4 misfire is back, I think the valves on that cylinder could be sticking or bent. It misses for like 30 seconds on a cold start and then runs smooth until it's parked overnight.

I think it's time for some new tires, the 10 year old michelins are so hard that I can spin them on asphalt, and occasionally (once every couple years) one will disintegrate.

New shoes, Walmart house brand a/t tires that have decent reviews (made by gt radial) they're not as quiet as the old michelins but they're way grippier.

I just did another timing belt this morning, because I didn't pre set the belt tension correctly and used cheap parts last time, so the belt would slap above 4000 rpm.

And I discovered the original alternator is still on the car.

Well I tried to do crown king with some Toyota people, and broke something in the transfer case on the first obstacle. Ended up taking the ride of shame but I made it home just fine.

I now have a transfer case that won't shift and is stuck in neutral. I think I jammed up a shift fork. I doubt it's really broken but if I find carnage you'll get some pictures.

I was using gl5 in my transfer case because most of them say safe for yellow metals/manual transmissions.

cool thread. I admire that you're modding your truck in a way that works for you while most of us would never dream of straying from stock. Any update on this?

The shifter i made from the transfer case was the wrong shape, allowing it to slip out of the high-low shift fork. I welded a nut to the side and sanded it down to the right shape so now it's too big to slip out of the shift fork. My transfer case didn't come with a shifter, but most boneyard cases do. I got the transfer case from a nearby scrap yard and they threw away the shifter when they got rid of the rest of the truck.

My life would be easier if I could get just a shifter but it's too late now.

I haven't put the transfer case back in the truck yet because of the rain (have to take the case apart to reset the shift forks, old Monteros have a different shift tower that you can remove from inside the car)

The old shifter design worked until i got the transfer case bound up and tried to shift from 4l to 4h with the transmission in drive

Glad you didn't ruin the transfer case and you were able to make it work again. Thanks for the update

Hey, you just put on a little wax and buff that out! Bet you won't even notice it from 3 feet away... from the driver's side.
