Montero Gen 2 owners... suspension version questions

The uphill battle begins
So I still have my 2001 Sport. Did the 2 inch body lift to fit my 33s. I'm still working out the rest of my lift. Had tabled it for the time being till some information came out.

It has come to my attention via another sport owner that there are similarities in the coil spring od diameters between the sport and full size Montero. Enough that he swapped in a set from a 98 full size Montero onto his Sport. It fit and lifted his sport. He says the Montero coil springs (sport type) offer similar lift properties to OME kit when installed on a Montero Sport. Also the same with using the full size Montero torsion bar on the Sports. The full size Montero "sport type" had beefier torsions. Again these fit. This is awesome news if I can find the right Full-size at the junkyard.

He pulled coils and torsions from a 98 with a locker rear, adjustable shocks and I believe w/ 4 doors, so a LWB? I also believe there was mention of there being the 3.5. I gathered the info across a few threads, but parts may have been pulled from multiple vehicles. I asked about coil wire dimensions to verify before I pulled. I don't have a full size manual to verify the info, but he posted pics of the fsm today. He did post the torsion diameters from his digital calipers, so I'm set there.

SO my question becomes what variations are there in the gen 2 coil springs and torsion bars. I have been searching and have gotten spotty info with no real mention of differences to parts across the years and models. Where are the larger coils and torsions seen on Fullsize gen 2s?

I saw mentioned a 97-99 winter package that eluded to a taller stance? Maybe the SWB versus the LWB? Does the LWB have stiffer coils and torsions? or the 3.5 versions? or is it only the SR versions?

Please if you can help verify what I need to look for. I guess I need to verify what gen 2 trim level and years would carry the strongest coils and torsions. Sport type seen below in the FSM pages....

If I can consolidate the vehicles that will match the criteria in the below pics for the "sport type" fullsize configuration, there might be a budget lift for coiled Montero sports!

Below is what the member on the sport forum posted... can anyone throw out what gen 2s got the larger "sport" version the manual references?

these are the specs and where from, not all have sport suspension. But I remember the Montero I got my stuff from did have a locker and adjustable rear shocks. But I know where another is (for a week maybe) though I did not look for locker.

Oh and i did some research looking at ome lifts... seems there are part number cross overs between the Montero sport and Montero fullsize...

1991-1999 Fullsize Monteros w/ rear coils 20mm (.75inch) lift
Frt
(303011) Torsion bars for the 95-00 w/ 1308mm length
(60040) Nitrocharger sport
Rear
(2910) lift medium duty

2000-2008 Challenger Montero Sport w/ rear coils 40mm (1.5inch) lift
Frt
(303011) Torsion bars
(60040) Nitrocharger sport
Rear
(2911) lift medium duty
(2910) lift heavy duty

The gen 2/2.5 only came in a long wheelbase version in the USA as far as I know, and the 97-00 model only came with the 3.5 engine, winter package only came on the 98 and 99 models. There are threads on here detailing all of the variations between model years and suspension options.

Thank you... I was searching on here for 2 days and only found 2 threads that mentioned the winter package and that it came with better suspension. I was focusing on coil spring info, so maybe my search parameters were flawed.

Was just trying to verify if that was indeed correct and the only way one sees the larger suspension components.

I see in your signature you have a 98 with the winter package, but opted to go with ome suspension. How much did it improve your ride over your factory set up? Did it lift it additionally?

Search my started threads and you will see my OME thread.

Thank you!

Found it:

Any comment about the OME lift versus the winter package factory height from the coils? I assume you went with the (303011 or 303010) Torsion bars and (2910) coils lift medium duty based on your comments on your thread? I had just looked at a pdf of OME part options and those were the number it I had come up with. That is in part when my brain was clicking and confirming the possibility of crossover parts.

Just trying to get a feel for the height on the winter package versus the OME in reference to the coils... Want to confirm the winter package came with the larger coils from mitsu that provided a taller stance versus other fullsizes.

If I'm right, you got a negligible lift from the 2910s, but instead got a better ride versus your mitsu coils.

Still trying to finds a thread that actually mentions the fullsize "sport type" configuration notated in the FSM and dictates what vehicles they actually were an option on and what trim level they came on. Nothing yet. UGH!

Well i can confirm the winter package is the "sport type" the fsm mentions. Just pulled the coils and torsions out of a 99 winter package. Torsion diameter was read with digital calipers and was as fsm indicates for the "sport type"... And coils had the light blue pain blob on them.

Notice the light blue paint splotch... just as the FSM indicates

Anyone have any insight as to which gen2s came with the larger coils and torsion bars?

I came across a 95 in the junkyard without a locker and it was a no go for the larger bars (26.4 normal type) and coils.

Anyone with an "SR" with the factory bars want to post up the torsion bars diameter? Verify if your springs come with the light blue paint blob?

How about the 3.5 versions? Same questions?

Trying to compile this info for others... for budget Sport lifts!

Just wanted to mention that there are some Puerto Rico/Guam spec SRs floating around the US which have slightly different specs. For example, my 1998 SR has the 6G72 3.0 liter engine and has the larger rear diff w/o the locker. It's an odd-ball when we're all used to seeing the US-spec facts. Among other things like it has cloth interior instead of leather and a non-opening/sliding rear window—both my preference anyways. I still need to confirm the sway bars and spring sizes, however. I will post them here in case it's valuable for someone else.

Thanks for your research too!
