Miley, a 2002 E350 conversion

I thought I'd start a thread to document the rather slow conversion I'm doing to my van.

Purchased it 2 years ago, in September of 2017. I had helped a friend of mine get a van about 6 months before, so that got me thinking about them. I had had Subaru wagons for many years before buying this beast.

Down the rabbit hole I went of 4x4 van conversion, and came to the conclusion that Ford was the answer. In October of 17, I was scheduled for shoulder surgery to finally fix my dislocating shoulder. And since all I owned at the time was manual transmission vehicles, I decided it was a great time to buy a van with an automatic! On to Craigslist I went, and back I came with a 2002 E350 cargo, extended body, 6.8L V10, with 242k miles. All for the low price of $1200! No frame rust anywhere, with only a tad bit of body rust under the shelves in the back of the van. I took off the ladder rack, shelves, bulkhead, and sold them on CL. Now I was in the van for about $950!

This is the first vehicle I've named, but it was rather appropriately named. When I got it, it had a hole in one of the throttle body hoses, which caused the van to "twerk", as my aunt put it, at stoplights. It's white, and it used to twerk, so it got named Miley.

First up on the list of things to do to a $1000 van, is a tune up. I bought the van from a contractor, and he had just been driving it without maintaining it all that well. Desperately needed some TLC. Standard tune up things, plus a few coil packs that started to fail. Shortly after that, I put the manual tow mirrors on, as the ones on the van I didn't care much for.

A year after buying the van, it started making noises from the rear axle. According to the door code, it was supposed to be a limited slip 3.73 Dana 60. However, there was no limited slip action, and it sounded like a bearing was failing. And since I planned to swap the front with a solid D50/60, I decided to do the rear axle swap first, and get the F series 10.5 axle in. Scored a 1999 F250 10.5 with 4.10 gears and factory limited slip, which was still working. All for about $125 at the local pull n pay.

All I had to do was get it setup properly for the wider van width. I was advised that the 99 axles didn't fit, because the leaf spring would interfere with the driver's side brake caliper. In 99, Ford had the caliper on the front of the driver's side, instead of the rear. While it was certainly close, I have found this to not be an issue. I pulled the outer brake pad, and tested it while setting things up. I had enough clearance, so under the van it went.

I have a '99 in mine too. Worked out just fine. That's a nice little axle stand you built. Should also come in handy when you rebuild the front. I added casters to the stand I made so I could move my axle around while I was rebuilding it.

You're off to a nice start, keep the progress coming.

Time to update this thread:

Many months ago, pre-covid days, I was walking through a local junkyard and came upon a hotel van. One of the few vans I've seen with a extended body high top. Called a friend, borrowed a trailer, and away I went with my $100 high top! It sat, and then hung, in my garage for many, many months, while I figured out and eventually got all the metal van parts off, and cleaned up the fiberglass. Today was a wonderfully nice day, so I finally cut the hole in the roof and put the top on! I also learned air shears are a wonderful thing!
