I couldn't find anything online that said it was even possible to do.

So, I did some research on the connectors and wiring, and perhaps that's why I didn't find anything - it's so simple...

And it works flawlessly.

Why do I need an extension? I work both road rally and Best In The Desert races locally, and being out of the truck sure helps when trying to read vehicle numbers.

One thing to mention is the extender cable you show or might find at Radio Shack, etc. would be wired unshielded parallel and straight (non-twisted) through. This will make the cable more susceptible to picking up interference on the mic input, so make sure you keep the length as short as possible and routed away from noise sources like power cables, coax, etc. If you wanted to make a better extension or had to go longer distances you might considering a custom cable shielding pin 5 (mic input) with pin 4 (GND).
