Mercedes Benz 100D 4x4 conversion?

It is front wheel drive. Does that preclude it from being converted to 4x4?
Generally speaking yes. You could always take a second 100D and cut the whole front end mechanicals and needed electronics free, weld the suspension to no longer turn....... and then weld it in place of your rear axle. Would be major ass hackery

Anything is possible. There are a number of transverse transaxles that have a rear driveshaft and transfer case. Fitting one of those might work or just fitting a standard longitudinal drivetrain with a front and rear axle and transfer case.
