larger images

I admire some of the images on here and I'm wondering just how you go from uploading standard 'post-card' size, to larger images,

as you create the pictures on camera, do you set image size to a larger default than normal,

but what do you do next?

My I-photo software only appears to create a standard size image,
would I need something else to edit/store my images

any advice guys

I take all of my pics at the full setting on the camera, then I use MS Image Resizer to shrink them down to 1200x900 to post on forums.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx
It will let you resize a full batch all at once too.
Image Resizer

This PowerToy enables you to resize one or many image files with a right-click.
I then use Picasa to lighten up any dark images, then FTP them to my personal server.

Nikon L110, this has an image mode menu of:

4000x3000
3264x2448
2592x1944
2048x1536
1024x768
is it best to shoot at a higher figure (these are dimensions of print right?) and buy a couple of spare SD cards

once you have them in Iphoto you can save whatever size you like :)
I take it you are on a mac since you said I-Photo ? this is what I describe below but in general most programs have something like this in their menus :)

go to the menu File>Export
you will see the tab File Export
Jpeg quality using Medium will give you a bit smaller file without to much compression choosing small might be to much compression ? so I would say use Medium and set a custom to 1000 for most photos on this forum are in that range that you see a lot of us post anything over 1280 is getting BIG by some peoples standards :) to put that into a size you understand check out the challenge threads :) they asked to have the photos at 1240 for those images :) so this will give you a idea of how big things are in pixels as you see them in your browser :)

Small is 640x480 and large is 1280x960

you can also make custom and put in whatever you like ? such as 1240 which will give you the largest size they want for the challenge photos :)

I would use these only for web or email etc. when going to print use the original no compression settings ;)

hope this helps you out ;)

yes shoot your highest settings and then reduce to what you want or need for the web !
for print generally its nice to have the size in chance you get a great shot and want to make a nice larger photo :)

these days with card prices 8GB minimum is what I would suggest
their are many thoughts spread your stuff out over a few cards or one larger card ?

as a pro photographer who has been shooting digital a touch over 10 years now buying quality cards such as Sandisk I have never lost images

the idea of spreading your cards around vs a large one ?
well a large one sits in the camera so no chance of loosing loose cards or fumbling and dropping them in the mud or where ever you are ?
yes if a card fails so badly you cant get the images you loose them all from the last time you downloaded ? but again I have never really seen this and every time it boils down to human error and sliding in and out cards can that wear them down quicker etc.. ? again I and almost every good pro I know uses the larger cards theory and some use the spread them out theory ?
I think the larger cards less messing about is the way to go

some of the eyefi cards seem pretty cool these days so that might be worth looking into more

Richard, Another option if you choose to have your images hosted on a photo gallery website is just upload the full size or maybe downsized a bit. I down size mine to 3000 pixels on the long edge then upload them to my Smugmug site.

When I want to post an image to a forum I can then select whatever size I want by choosing that size in the photo link options.
