Can anyone tell me the design advantage of using that sloping angle along the side over the tires?

In doodling for my (much longer) trailer, I'm thinking of putting in removable external side storage units hanging where the tires aren't an issue, and a right-angle overhang would make that easier
I was told by a much older soldier than I that it allowed room to hook up to remove heavy generators and such. The area to hook up to them was in that area. Still doesn't answer why they didn't square it off instead of the angle, but I understand having access to the hook points. Seems more plausible than the floating thing in my head.

****** the picture shows 8 1/2 inches of room for tires. Upon further inspection if you look there is also a head of a bolt and a washer that impedes upon this by another 3/4 of an inch...just something to think about when you are measuring all your backspacing for rims and tires sizesdiagram template 2_8.jpg
