I was digging through my stuff and found this large snatch block. weighs 20lbs, no markings that I can see and the top opens up so you slip a cable on. Any ideas on the maker or a rough estimate on working limits ?

I acquired one that looks exactly like that in a box of stuff at an auction from a tree service that closed. The pully on mine has a big chip taken out of it making it pretty much junk. It is just a low grade cast iron pully on a bolt that is probably 3/4 diameter. I believe this was meant to use with hemp type rope. No way would I use it with a winch with wire rope.

I can see grooves from it being used with cable but the square nuts means it is from a time when you'd keep pulling until something broke.

You'll want to take it apart and make sure the pulley is steel and the axle is OK then you can size it by finding something similar online. The diameter (6"??) of the pulley will tell the min wire rope size it can be used with.
