my son and I went camping last weekend and managed to break the Coleman propane lantern globe on the first night, any suggestions on how to carry a spare?

I carry mine in my AT Chaser!! It rides on on air bags so it makes a great storage compartment for a spare globe! Mine has yet to break! ;)

I carry mine in one of these hard plastic cases that Coleman makes. It works great by keeping everything nice and snug. They have versions for almost all gas lanterns, even the older ones, and I think you can even find these at WalMart.

Welcome to ExPo.........."smokymt"..............!

I have one of those cases also.

I actually carry my Coleman Lantern in that case...........sitting in the soft comfort of my passenger seat and covered up by my Columbia jacket!

You also need to make sure that your lantern does not bounce around. If it bounces way too much...........you will end up with broken burner elements.

I always carry extras in my glove box where they are easy to find, even in the dark!.

And as a last resort.............I carry a 12 Volt Lantern.

Thanks for the welcome, and good point. I typically have my case surround by my sleeping bads and other softer gear. I also make sure to throw in some extra mantles as well.

I keep mine in one of those cases as well. Bungee'd in the back with the dog. I've done some serious rocky trails with it back there and it's fine.

I've done all that and still managed to break my globe a couple of times. I got tired of replacing it and finally went with one of the wire mesh ones. I rarely used the lantern on high before, so the somewhat diminished light with the mesh globe wasn't really an issue for me. Something else to consider...

I use one of these:

The whole lantern is smaller but in particular the globe is much smaller and because of its design compared to the Coleman, I think it is less prone to breakage. Gives off the same light as a single mantle Coleman.

I too use one of these, and I also have really good luck with it. The globe on these are made in Germany, and are pretty thick and compact. I don't think I paid anywhere near that price for it either, I think mine was about $8 or so.

I've broken many globes before but my latest, 4-5 year old, Coleman Northstar with the metal cage has yet to break, even stored in a soft case. The globe design is also a bit stronger than plain cylindrical design.

Try a folgers coffee can er should I call it a plastic jug lol. Worst case wash the globe and leave it in the coffee, to use it as a shock absorber. Then you can have your coffee and storage too..:)

I use to pack eggs that way, in zip lock bags in the coffee. Works great.

Of course that was before we knew that eggs would cause sure and certain death if not stored under carefully temperatures.
