I agree. The truck doesn't move without fuel and it's built to do what i want. The only real consideration is range.
I was glad to see you can get the extra tank with the deisel. Last trip to Colorado we traveled state route 36 from the Midwest and enjoyed that much more than Interstate. Part of the route was the old pony Express and had some historic areas.

I found the Ram spec table. For a crew chassis cab 4x4 diesel DRW 60" CA, the payload/GVWR & FAWR/RAWR is as follows:

3500.....6157/14,000.....6000/9850
4500.....6300/15,000.....7250/12,000
5500....10,067/18750....7250/13,500

Seems one could get over the 6000 pound payload fairly easy with extra gear, flatbed and water. I'd considered carrying an extra water tank with the 5500 payload.
