GrandiOdyssey: Circumnavigating the Globe in a '19 Tacoma Build Thread

Looks awesome!

I'm sure you were aware of the potential GVWR issues and the comments that would come from it so what were the deciding factors of going with a Tacoma over something bigger like a Tundra, F150 etc?
There are lots of tradeoffs with anything. Getting a tundra doesn’t really fix the problem because most of the extra GVWR rating gets taking up by larger campers, heavier accessories etc. Plus then you have much large truck that gets much worse fuel economy, is much worse to drive around tight trails/ cities etc, harder to ship, etc.
Non raptor F150s can also be a good choice but are much harder to service internationally, are still quite large and difficult to drive in many situations.

Unfortunately there is no GVWR upgrade program in the US like there is in Australia. We did all of the necessary modifications to support the extra weight with the custom valved Icon suspension, OME Dakar heavy leafs with add a leaf, bump stops, E rated tires etc. We also pursued aggressive weight reduction by removing components from the FWC like wooden sleeping tray, table, adding Lithium battery etc as well as removing tailgate, rear bench seat, rear seat belts, rear window sliding mechanism etc in additional to bringing only minimal lightweight gear. We are always look into ways to remove weight further by tossing unnecessary gear. Our overall weight should be inline with the XOverland Tacoma which we used as inspiration and seems to be going pretty strong without any major issues.
