Part One [Introduction]
This a report from a trip two friends and I took in October 2012. We drove all night to get to Southern Utah in my friend's brand new, 2012 double-cab, short-bed, TRD Off-Road, Toyota Tacoma. He had just outfitted it with sliders, aluminum skid plates, and a soft topper.
-----
We found ourselves on a Utah highway just after dawn on the morning of our arrival. There was a noticeable amount of hunters scattered around the area, parked on the shoulders of the road. We saw several deer. Those deer included one that jumped out in front of us (from "out of nowhere" as they always do). We hit it. The truck had about 1200 miles on it.
-----
The deer ran off (with a noticeable limp). DoorDing, the owner of the Tacoma, who was driving at the time, just kept on going. Ex-Coloradan and I were surprised he did not stop to check the damage. DoorDing was of the mindset that the damage was done and there was nothing to do about it. We found that there were two "minor" cracks in the plastic front bumper and grill when we later stopped. Not too bad at all for hitting a deer, but more than enough to make you cringe because of the newness of the truck.
-----
Part Two [Arrival]
We arrived at our destination, Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, several hours later. We went south from the town of Escalante on Hole-in-the-Rock Road. We pulled off on several two-tracks until we found one suitable for our base camp for the week.
-----
Once we made camp, we went exploring the area on foot.
