From what I have heard, MB USA is seriously contemplating bringing in the big V8 diesel powered G in the near future. .

I don't believe you - any sources on that? We'd be very interested if it does happen. As it stands, I already have two rovers that get less than 15 mpg so I don't see much reason to jump on what in my mind is the coolest suv/truck for so much $ when it also sucks fuel so bad.

My fiance drove an 05 G55 and an 09 G550, both of which she liked, smoother on the new one, possible the 7spd and naturally aspirated and had fun in the G55 even though it's older.

We are going to stick to our ideas on finding a long journey off road capable vehicle that also has decent mpg and range. For now, my 13.4 mpg LR3 will have to do for fun trips on the west coast and the 04 Discovery at 12mpg for work on the east coast. Someday I'll have something cool that also gets 25mpg cross country - a TDV8 G would be a dream come true.

They wouldn't bring the Diesel V8 model to America. It has a few problems in Europe, so much so that people do not want to buy them used because of the bad reputation.

That's too bad really, I "wanted" to believe it but something that "sounds too good to be true usually isn't true"

Even their V6tdi would be ok, at least great range right? I am guessing with the tiny market share here that a tdi would sell about 100 nationwide, if that.

Hi Folks...

My name is Andreas, I´m a teacher for car mechanics and german-language and history, live in Denkendorf near Stuttgart, drive a S 124 300TD from 1989 with 460 000 km and went out on the internet to find some more travelers :D

Hope I don´t sound like a smartass if I tell you a little something about my dream car........which i just ordered yesterday (and I am happy like a little boy receiving his favourite toy!!!):wings::wings::wings::wings: Hopefully I dont have to wait till november 2010 to get mine...the waiting list is long.

What you in fact get is:

Barely civil version of the Bundeswehr (german armed forces) G-Model, Type
W461 with W463 powerplant (that means permanent all wheel drive, 3 electronic locking differentials, 5 speed automatic with electronic-shifting reduction), the OM 642 DELA red. (the 3 liter V6 engine with intercooler and Turbo, common-rail-direct injectet and specially protectet, 184 HP and 400NM, reduced power output). All electronic components can be found in the center console (as an armrest) -speacially sealed-, so they won´t get wet; differentials are also specially protected against water, making it possible to travel trough water with a max. depth of 70cm and the option of two different off-road packages.

Offroad-Paket 1 (8.330 Euro) contains Short axle 4,86:1, cargo anchorage, walk-on-hood, black alloys 265/75-16, central locking, and protection for headlamps and turning signals

Offroad-Paket 2 (14.280 Euro) includes options of package 1 plus CD-Radio, power-adjustable mirrors, independent vehicle heater (engine and interior) and aircondition.

Thats it.

The stock G PUR is absolutely naked! No roof-racks, no snorkels, nothing! See it here: http://www.autobild.de/mmg/mm_bildergalerie_939578.html

This is what a G PUR with Offroad-Paket 2 really looks like, with the 50:50 split back door beeing an extra (1865 Euro): http://home.mobile.de/home/details.html?id=112734793&customerId=488358&partnerHead=1

And that´s the one I ordered! It´ll be equiped with a WARN-Winch, roof-rack, ARB rooftent and snorkel; cost´s round about 67 500 Euros all together...

The G 461 Worker with inline 5 cylinder engine OM 612 was only available for military, fire brigades, police and communes and went out of sale when the OM 642 was introduced.

The stronger version of the OM642 has got 224 hp and 500NM and is available in the G 320 CDI (now G 350 CDI). In 2010, the engine will deliver 265 hp and 650NM as the OM 642 DELA evo.

Sorry for the mistakes I may have made in the text above, I´m from Germany.... ;)

So far! photos will follow as soon as I have my own...

Well...seems we all have to wait for a freaking long time.

My dealer just called yesterday and the estimated delievery date seems to be...

Nov.2010! ******? That´s more than a year from now:Wow1: Bit sad right now...but everytime i look at those pictures I get that big grin on my face again.

I´ve just read a test in "Offroad Magazin"; a major problem seems to be, that the G PUR still has the heavy duty suspension of the military version, thererfor I expect the suspension to be quite stiff. Tests will show, if I´ll need to change the coil springs...

I still wonder, if it´s possible to install an ARB winch-bumper to a G. I´ve seen different attempts in the past but they all weren´t exactly a good peace of craftsmanship...
The only one I found is the one in the attachment...but 1880Euros plus the speacial technical permission to drive a car with solid bullbar ??(also round about 2000Euro; In Europe we´re not allowed to drive cars with solid bullbars since 2002 ´cause of pedestrian safety...:jumping:)

The other version would be a stock W463 Bumper which is converted to host a winch...but somehow...it just looks way too... let´s say tender and fragile. It´s so easy to brake the fog lights down there...no way! but it seems to be the only legal version here. Any other Ideas? DIY-Bumper?

By the way: Does anyone of you know ORC (www.orc.de) ? One of the speacialists for Mercedes Benz Geländewagen. I live around the corner, so if you find anything interesting in their catalogue, let me know...
