Front wheel bearing preload

The. Manual isn't clear how to measure the front wheel bearing preload.

It says to wrap a cord around the lug bolts and pull with a spring scale.

The value should be 1.5 to 2.9 lb ft.

Is that just the lb reading I get on the scale or do they want me to use the radius of the lug bolt circle to Calc an actual torque number.

Any advice would be appreciated.

The value indicated in the manual is the amount of pull force required to start the driveshaft turning.

Including the grease friction, or in addition to the grease friction (which can be half of the total)?

I don't do it the way the manual says but it is correct. I do it by feel been doing it for years.

A piece of string wrapped around the wheel studs and pull it with a spring scale. It should start to rotate at 4 -7.7 Lbs pull and if you keep pulling it, the scale should settle at 2.2 +/- 0.7 Lbs.

Do the axle nut up firm and rotate the hub (a couple of turns). This is done to clear the excess grease of the bearing rollers. Then loosen the hub nut (loose, it relaxes the tension on the bearings) and bring it back up to just touching the bearing. Then do your piece of string trick.

Do the figures come up right, I can't tell you. There needs to be a little preload on the bearings but not excessive.
