Freespirit Recreation Odyssey Tent - Any info out there? Opinions about GoFSR?

Here you go @BigMF
I've had the Odyssey 55 Tri-Layer for about 6 months now, Sept '20, spending at least 2-3 nights in each of those 6 months. (gotta love SoCal winters) I have noted the same issues as @Upnarms
Fading of whatever coating FSR used on the perimeter aluminum frame, wonky ladder attachment, and misalignment of front & rear latches (although not as severe). These are all problems you don't expect to see with a tent at this price point, borderline unacceptable. The Velcro tabs used to hold the door and screen up could be improved as both layers share the same tabs. I'd prefer to see an individual toggle & loop set up like on all my previous tents, just easier to operate. The LED light strip is cool, but would be better if they included an in-line switch of some type rather than having to unplug the USB from your power bank to turn it off. And here is a weird thing, the frame has no floor! Not a solid one anyway. The mattress is simply supported by quite a few closely spaced aluminum cross members. You don't feel it when laying down, but when sitting up, you definitely notice the ridges & valleys on your bum. I wouldn't quite call it a negative, but it's just weird.

With all of that said, I love this thing. The Tri-Layer fabric really adds some insulating properties in both warm & cool weather and does an admirable job of keeping that early morning sun out if you care to stay in bed a bit longer. Setup & tear down is a breeze, especially compared to my previous soft shells and the low-pro stance is perfect. All the zippers work great and I don't mind the undoubtedly firm mattress. The fabric is taut when set up and I've had no problems with water intrusion in the few brief rains I've experienced. I moved up to the hard shell and the Odyssey specifically for the capability of the cargo rack which I use to haul my Port-a-boat. Overall there are several things that could be improved, but a very solid tent nonetheless.

GoFSR is a great company! They have a hardshell tent that weighs only 80 or 90 lbs (which is crazy).

I think you mean GoFast Campers and are referring to the Superlite. FSR (Free Spirit Recreation) does not have something like that to my knowledge

Pre ordered the odessey 49, was super excited about this tent. In my opinion it's the best looking hardshell out there. The low profile design and rack was exactly what is looking for.

Finally got mine after some production delays and a reported warranty issue with the anodized aluminum finish. Got it mounted on my rhino rack pioneer platform by the company I bought it through.

I took the tent out that following weekend and discovered some issues. First issue, the mounting brackets flex a lot and use hand tightened knobs to secure. They came loose after 12 miles on dirt roads. I tightened them and they loosened again. I suspect the thin brackets contribute to this. Lock washers provided didn't matter. Ultimately I replaced these with sure heavy duty brackets and nyloc nuts made by another company and all is well.

2nd issue. When the ladder hooks into yhe inner part of the tent frame, the large hooks protrude so the door /screen rub against them if you close the door. The hooks press against the screen and will surely wear holes in the mesh over time. Ill fab a bracket on my rack to attach the ladder to to avoid this. Fsr should have had a better attachment point, as this is an obvious issue.

3rd, one of the latches (front) was riveted out of alignment. The top and bottom latches don't line up so they hook at an angle instead of straight up and down. Also, when closed the seal isn't tight along the door side. FSR told me the factory didn't put the rubber latches in the right spot. I moved them in more like I was told but it still isn't a great seal.

4th, this is probably just the nature of a low pro tent, but don't plan on keeping ANY bedding in there. It barely closes with nothing inside let alone a thin blanket.

5th, the mattress is hard. I have another brand rtt with a 3"mattress that is super comfy. This one is about 1", on top of a 2"one maybe, and it's very firm. Since I can't fit anything inside the tent, id have to use a sleeping pad and remove it each time to remedy this.

6th, the black finish on the front and back frame is turning bronze in areas and I've only had this 3 weeks.

Overall, I'm very disappointed in the execution of what seemed to be a promising tent. Quality control is bad at least on mine. Hopefully there is some kind of resolution in this matter as I have contacted them about this.

Some of these issues are inherent with a low pro tent, but the finish and alignment issue is a sign of poor quality control.

hi @Upnarms do you have any more pictures / info on how this is mounted to the platform? I get mine this week and I’m trying to decide the best way to do it. Thanks!

Any update so far? I know they change the ladder and I’ve worked on some quality control issues over the last year. I’m thinking about ordering one.

I Just got my Odyssey 55 for an overland trailer build I am working on. I have it set up on sawhorses in the shop and I love it so far! Several of the fore mentioned issues have been corrected (such as the ladder hooks are eliminated and now it snaps into clips on the perimeter tracks so as not to interfere with the door zipper or take off sliding etc.)

I totally agree that there should be clips or toggles on the straps that hold the door and screen up. I bought some little clips (like the ones on the seat belt in shopping carts). I hope to try attaching them soon. Hopefully my plan works and they go on easily!

I have been searching for a little bluetooth switch that could go in line between my powerbank and the LED strip in the tent so each person could turn the lights on with their own phone and not have to reach over each other. This would also help in case you want to sleep with your head on the opposite end. (I know you could reverse the position of the LED strip but... not ideal.
An In-line switch would have been a great feature as mentioned.

I got the FSR double sleeping bag with it and I have to say it fits exactly and perfectly in the 55! I was able to close it with it in as well and it didn't bulge the sides of the hard-shell much if at all. I may consider an extra clamp thingy (technical term lol) in the middle of the long side just for good measure so to speak...

I can't wait to try this thing out! It is close to winter here ( WIsconsin - had temps in the 20's already...) and I am hoping to find enough heated shop space somewhere so I can finish my trailer build over winter and have it all ready to fly in spring!! Wish me luck!!

I reached out to FSR when I saw the new ladder for the Odessey, (looks to be a big improvement) to see if they would sell me just the top end so I could easily retrofit my old ladder and was told I would have to buy a whole new ladder for $175. Well that sucks. Especially since so many of us took issue with the original ladder design, you'd think they would be able to do something for existing customers, but no...

Wanted to update this thread.

Freespirit is apparently making a similar tent to the Superlite that GFC has. It will be slightly heavier at around 100 pounds vs 85 or so for the Superlite, but still lighter than the typical 140-175 pound range for a wedge style tent.

I am looking to get it as it should be in the mid 2k range and it will be a bit more insulated than the GFC version.
